Makes ya wonder how many households have an HDTV set. Think about it, you
can go buy a 27" for $200 (or less for really cheap models) and even 30+
inch sets are under $500. So how many people are going to spend over $1000
(more likely closer to $2K or more) on an HD set. I'd be willing to bet that
only 2 or 3 out 10 sets sold are HD.

[VOOM] Re: Voom gains 2 satellite orbits

What's worse is some who buy HD sets still don't know you have to get
the HD signal. Case in point my upstairs neighbor got a 48' JVC 3
weeks ago, last night I finally met up with him to see it.
He has it hooked up via coax saying he only watches DVD on it b/c the
pic is not that good. And this TV looks nice it has HDMI and
everything. I showed him what he's missing and he going to get the
proper cables and have an HD STB installed from Cablevision... I'ts a
start. I have both VOOM and CV so he's going to use me for the VOOM
viewing LOL

[VOOM] Re: Voom gains 2 satellite orbits

I think the number of subs would explode if they added local HD
RSN's or SD RSN's where HD is not available and about a dozen SD
channels that are BIG holes. If they can match the standard lineup
of dish and direct minus the shopping and religious programming then
there would be no reason for a consumer not to choose VOOM. I think
they should hold off on the price increases until the sub base
increases. But most of all VOOM needs the missing channels that so
many people have come to rely on. I think people we be willing to
have two providers like Direct TV for the extra sports programming
like NFL ticket, but VOOM better hurry up, most NFL Ticket games are
now in HD, if they add HD RSN's, Cinemax and Starz and a few more HD
channels they may capture the market. I hope VOOM does hurry on
adding the channels or I made a large investment mistake.

Not for nothing but I keep hearing from people that Voom should match Dish and DirectTV in terms of channel offerings and I have to say I disagree to a certain point. I would much rather have Voom add a new HD channel every 4-6 months than have them rush to throw on 40 new SD channels.

Regional Sports Networks are ok, but I don't know if every area is like this but all the major local events, college and bro are broadcast OTA 80% of the time. Some really obscure events like University of Miami versus Loser School isn't. While I would like SCI-FI and USA, HGTV and Noggin for the family.. I would be HAPPIER if Voom added exclusives that offer Sci-Fi programming, home and garden type stuff, and a 2nd kids channel in HD. In other words to complete phase out off SD in my home is more important to me than merely adding channels .. which is why I'm glad I have a seperate OTA antenna, I don't want Voom wasting bandwidth on that.

[VOOM] Re: Voom gains 2 satellite orbits

SD does not need the bandwidth of HD and there are only about a
dozen important SD channels missing from VOOM's lineup plus the
RSN's. I know of many people who do not want multiple services and
are holding out until VOOM gets SCI-FI, G4TechTV, all the Discovery
channels, more Nick channels, RSN's and HGTV (I didn't think anyone
watched that one). So by using a little bandwidth consumers won't
have to make a choice on which sat provider to go with. If VOOM has
all of the important SD channels that D* and E* carry it will be a
no-brainer on which company to go with.

I agree a parallel emphasis needs to be placed on getting more HD
channels like USA-HD, Inhd1, Inhd2, Hdnet and maybe some more
original channels like SCI-FI HD. But unless VOOM can get and afford
licenses for Stargate, Sliders and other SCI-FI shows they need to
get SCI-FI.

I would agree with you about carying just HD programming, but by
adding 80 SD channels so far, VOOM has made it clear that they don't
just want to be an HD provider who provides a HD package like D* and
E*'s. If that were they case, they should drop the price so the
masses can afford two services.
