Tegna removes local channels

Not 100% sure on that one, but I don't think any of it is tied to any MVPD subscription. That said, I know they have some free content, and some that requires a a separate paid subscription of its own. Not sure where the NASCAR coverage might fall.
You can get everything with ads for $4.99 and $9.99 without ads.

Tegna Removes Local Channels from DISH TV Customers Nationwide
October 6, 2021
- Tegna demands unreasonable fee increase
- Programmer turns its back on its public interest obligation, uses customers for negotiation leverage
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct. 6, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a news release from DISH:

Tegna Inc. today removed its local stations from nearly 3 million DISH TV customers in 53 markets across the country. The programmer is using customers as negotiation leverage, demanding a massive fee increase to nearly a billion dollars and holding viewers hostage during football season.

"We made a fair offer to keep Tegna stations available to our customers, but Tegna rejected it, forcing the removal of its channels," said Brian Neylon, group president, DISH TV. "Tegna is looking to sell its stations to the highest bidder and is simply trying to exploit DISH customers as a way to get the maximum price and further fatten their wallets."

"Tegna is demanding we pay for 100% of our subscribers in their markets, regardless of whether these subscribers receive or want Tegna's programming," added Neylon. "As one of the nation's largest local station owners, they are more interested in increasing their bottom line by charging our customers more money than providing programming to viewers under fair terms."

In the early 2000's, broadcasters like Tegna began charging cable and satellite companies to deliver their "free" local station signals to the public. This new revenue stream for broadcasters totaled a few million dollars in 2006, but has grown to over $12 billion dollars today. Free local programming has effectively become a multi-billion-dollar industry for broadcasters and a tax on American consumers. And now, Tegna is trying to raise this tax.

"We apologize to our customers and we're deeply disappointed in Tegna's decision to remove its channels from DISH in an effort to try and force an unjustifiable fee increase that directly impacts our customers," said Neylon. "We can't sit by and accept Tegna's unreasonable demands. We will continue fighting on behalf of our customers to come to a fair deal that is beneficial for all."

Affected Stations

Tegna's action affects viewers of various ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CW, MNT and TDO stations in 53 markets nationwide. For a full list of affected stations, click here.

You do not need to use Seek. You just need to select the OTA channel and then you can use DVR timers. The problem wIth using a DVR timer would be if you had it set up for the satellite channel that is in dispute.

With the seek setting,
I did not have to set/select a ota timer.
With the previously set 'seek' timer hopper selected the ota channel automatically.
Again I did not have to change/add any seek timers.
Just an FYI for a good reason seek timers might be prefered to standard single channel timers.

However, the Hopper software (as far as I know) does not allow you to choose whether you want a seek timer or a single-channel timer. You could on older receivers, but not on the Hoppers. You can't edit an existing timer and change it to seek, and the only time I can get it to create a seek timer is to search for something that doesn't currently exist in the guide. If it finds a match in the guide, then it creates a single-channel timer on the channel where it found the match.

I use "Seek" for recording all of the local programming we want to watch. As mobile fulltime RV'ers, that saves having to reset recordings every time we change locals as we move around.

Here in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, we lost KARE11 (NBC) Wednesday night, about 75% of the way through Chicago Med. So we missed that, Chicago Fire and P.D., and Thursday's Law & Order SVU and OC.

I went to NBC's Web site to watch missed episodes online. I did not "link" to my DISH subscription, because that just told me these shows were not available to me. I was able to access the missed episodes on a free 3 "ticket" pass, one ticket per episode. But when streaming the episodes (with commercials), and with all ad-blocking and cookie restrictions disabled, each episode repeatedly crashed and I could not get to the end of any them. I did not get a credit back on any ticket wasted on crashed streams. My ISP is fast enough to support down-streaming, and I'm knowledgeable enough to try different Web browsers, different computers, and different settings. So NBC is not spending much effort to let us view the episodes we miss during this dispute, unless we spend more money. Shame on TEGNA and NBC!

add the ota module, ota c11 still there, with guide information.

This is a great suggestion, but... Over-The-Air (OTA) won't work, as I'm in south central Minnesota, 43 miles from the Twin Cities broadcast antennas in Shoreview.

I'm not just guessing about this--I've tried OTA with every indoor antenna I can find. If had a window on the north side of my living room, it might work but it doesn't through a solid wall. (Why an indoor antenna? I live in a townhouse where rooftop antennas are not permitted.)

I love my DISH network, and I wish all these local stick-ups (as in old stagecoach robberies) would just cease.

Can't you mount an outdoor high-gain antenna on your private balcony? I thought there were regulations to that effect.

You might get away with clamping an antenna to the facia or soffit such that there are no roof penetrations.

Software must have changed...

I just use search function by program name,
Choose the correct program,
See a list of available guide/on demand,
And just below the program description is the 'record all' seek timer button.

Nearly all of my timers are seek timers.

Everybody thinks that if you live in a townhouse or apartment you can just stick a antenna any where you want. It just doesn't work that way! I had to beg to just install my Dish antenna for my apartment. That's why I get mad every time I see a post that says install an OTA. I depend on Dish to get my locals and the companies that own all these TV stations and retransmission crap SUCKS.

Not to mention all of us out in the boonies who despite having an adjustable, high-gain antenna with amplifier cant receive stable OTA signals.

  1. I was not replying to you; I was just trying to help. Snissen's circumstances may be better than yours.
  2. Nobody ever said you could just stick an antenna anywhere you want.
