The answer to all your questions is 'no'...... unless said company says 'yes' and will cancel after the person tries to get them to do so. If the company says 'no' because its in the contract then that, as they say, is that. But once the company says 'yes' it is obligated to follow through.

As for the legitimacy of this man's claim, if you were in his position and thought maybe Dish would help you by waiving the cost, wouldnt you try to get them to? Besides, there is a whole universe of difference between a company writing off a DVR and a house loan.

Many posting here now haven't read the whole thread.

Used to be, this kind of leased equipment would have been covered by the company. Phones? But in the past 30 years there has been a massive shift of risk from businesses, the wealthy, and the government... to the individual. Started with Reagan.

When was it EVER covered by Dish? A lease is a lease. And as such, if you lease something you're on the hook if whatever is being leased is destroyed.

Keeping the politics out of it...Dish hasn't been in business for 30 years :p

Remember, I never said Dish had ever indemnified.

I'm not going to repeat my original post above on this, so please go and read that.

Boy, what a terrible concept...an individual is responsible for their own actions and decisions. Why would a society desire that? Madness I say...madness!

Oh, so you think that no one felt responsible for their own actions and decisions before 1978...

That explains alot.

Many of the adults in the room, will remember the period from 1945 through 1970 as the fastest period of development and prosperity of any culture in history. And the period from 1985 through the present as far, far less innovative and far more destructive to the Middle Class, in objective comparison.

Well, you said it yourself...since Reagan, more responsibility has gone to the individual. So, if more responsibility is on the individual in today's society versus "before Reagan" and you don't like that, then yes, you probably were happy not to be as responsible for your own actions. If you want someone to change your own dirty diapers for you, there are plenty of places on the globe that will do that for you. That frankly, is not what our way of life is all about. And you can't be serious about innovation in the last 2 decades. Your idea of innovation may be cranking out widgets in a manufacturing plant...I'll give you that, those days are gone. But how about the tech boom? More has been provided for making daily life easier in the last 20 years via technology than ever before. I'm not taking away from what was done the four decades before, but there have been far more broad reaching advancements in the last 20 years to improve quality of life for everyone.

Petty, minor improvements, for such a long period.

You forgot that during the post-war period space travel was developed. The transistor. The computer. CNC machines. Satellites. Large-scale agriculture. Appliances. Plastics. The interstate highway system. The public library system.

All unbelievably radical developments before their time, which you unthinkingly take for granted today, and which make modern life possible. In fact much of this wouldn't ever happen in today's environment, as 'too socialistic'. But it was those conditions and limited regulation, which made America great. And deregulation and transfer of risk to the individual (who especially today can least afford to carry it) is bringing us down.

Let me tell you son, the innovators and thinkers can only produce in top form when they feel safe. And no one feels safe today, deny that. Fundamental breakthroughs can only happen when basic research is supported. And almost no basic research has been supported for twenty years.

You have no idea.

Okie dokie pops! You're right, I guess I don't know. You forgot about the caveman inventing the wheel! It is just silly to think that innovation has slowed since the "old days". You might not be a part of the innovation that is going on in today's world, but it is happening everyday. BTW, I can't believe your using the internet, on your PC, on a satellite dish forum that provides hundreds of channels with the latest video technology and still say nothing significant has happened in the last 2 decades. Medical advancements, which a man of your age probably utilize are far greater than the mid 1900's. The list goes on and on. I think you're the one who is taking things for granted...actually, you probably don't take them for granted, you just disagree with the free market way of providing goods and services that have given us these advancements.

This is funny -- the Chinese are better capitlist then we are. They will have the first mass produced electric car by 2010.

To get our automakers to compete with china it will take an act of congress.

Well, GM already has the Chevy Volt in production...electric powered car. And capitalism has nothing do with whether they embrace new technology or not. It comes down to the fact that our automakers have continued to make products we don't want to buy. SUV's, SUV's, SUV's have been the name of the game for them. Until they provide quality products at an affordable price, the foreign guys will continue to lead. And if you want us to be like China, we can get our workers to do the job for a few bucks a day and get rid of the unions here that are paying $100 an hour to stand on an assembly line. Sounds good to me.

Iam glad you agree. The UAW is agreeing to a pay cut and congress well---

Be ready to praise China they may own us all--they already own a big part of our debt.

The wrong guy always gets the credit. The wheel was no big deal. They had been rolling stuff on logs for years. The real kudos should go to the guy who invented the axle
:)

Haha...very true! I'm glad someone popped in with a little humor. I think this thread, including myself, has gotten a little out of hand. I appreciate the differing opinions, but I'm not sure we'll bang this out where we'll all agree. Until the government fully funds their mind control machine, then they can make us all agree. :D <-----Joking, joking! I'm thinking this thread should be closed...it's going nowhere and really has nothing to do with Dish Network at this point. But, I'm not in control of that, so ya'll continue to have at it.

Well, no. Wagoner is driving a hybrid Malibu to Washington instead of a Volt prototype. He is only driving the prototype mule the last mile or two.
BREAKING: GM CEO Will Drive Volt Mule Inside Washington DC Tomorrow | GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Electric Car Site

What GM officially released was a PLAN toward production. They are saying late 2010 as a 2011 model.

Lots of time to pull EV-1 type tricks. I wouldn't be surprised to see stuff like lease only, limited regional availability, fleet only, etc. And you can probably bet on 'production delays'

you just disagree with the free market way of providing goods and services that have given us these advancements.
Oh so you think we have a Free Market... this explains alot.

Apparently you haven't noticed that that computer system you are pounding on is a monopoly. Your satellite service is a monopoly. And automakers are an oligopoly, as are most other industries today. As the Strong get stronger, they do not encourage competition... they use their strength to crush it. This is what happens with no regulation. The only possible mathematical end result is one provider for everything, your car, your job, your food, your entertainment. Piss off McDonaldsGMSonyKrogerFluorExxonLowesCitibank, and you lose your car, your house, your job, everything, in the same day.

Your kind of 'free market' has resulted in the most massive transfer of wealth in the history of the world, from the US taxpayers, to the wealthiest 1%. Our Treasury is now $10.5 TRILLION in debt. Since you have no idea how much money that is, let me help you; divide that by the US population, and that works out to $35,000 for each man, woman, and child in the nation!! On top of all their personal debt!

Have you taken a little of that Personal Responsibility and paid your share yet, of this debt you've so vociferously advocated for, chikagobnd?

Thought not.

All talk, and no walk.

I pay it every two weeks...to fund all the BS government programs you love so much. Believe me, I would love to get rid of all the government spending that goes on to put us in such a position. Just like I'm paying all this money into social security for you to sit around and drink the Kool-Aid when I'll never see a dime of it. Enjoy it! BTW, that top 1 percent you talk about takes in about 18% of total personal income and pays 28% of the total federal income tax. That's according the Congressional Budget Office. They are paying more than their fair share. And also, you talk about the poor people with all their personal debt. Here's a thought...spend what you have, and don't spend what you don't. Pretty simple. Quantam, you are so pompous with your arguments, yet you don't seem to have a real grasp on how things work. Older doesn't always mean wiser.

Now this is hilarious. The poorest of the poor, defending the top 1%, vociferously advocating against his own best interests!

How incredibly ignorant!

No, by paying your share I don't mean your regular taxes. That's for ongoing operations. I'm asking whether you've paid your fair share of the debt! Actually your fair share would include my share because I have been fighting this massive Republican debt buildup which you've been supporting, from the beginning.

No little pagwan, little do you know, that you paid more taxes last year than Rupert Murdoch! Look it up.
