I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV.

Does anyone know if you have to be subscribed to Dishnetwork to get the various free News programs that air on Tvjapan? If I just have an unsubbed reciever and a dish pointed at 61.5 will it work?

i am not positve, but i don't think you would get the free channel. they usually only have the how to and demo channels left on.

If the receiver is unscubscribed, all you will get is 101, 103 (Dish 101, PPV preview)

If you have a subscribed receiver (even with just locals) you do get the free TVJapan newscasts

I must give Dish kudos, when it comes to TVJapan. Comcast, which also carries TVJapan in many areas, does not have the free newscasts. No tickie, no washie.

We hardly ever subscribed (except during Sumo and New Years Singing Contest), as the multiple free daily newscasts were generally good enough.
