What if the NFL used Harbin Point System instead of only W-L?

Yeah... I triple checked my formula for the weighting system for an unbalanced schedule (8 games v 9). It all came down to L3. Statistically the Colts and Bengals are a dead heat. :) 9ers and Saints have played teams that have very few victories themselves. To put things in perspective, the Chiefs have won every one of the their games. The Bengals only 6 games. However the teams these guys have beaten have the same total of victories among them! IOW, the Bengals have beaten "better" teams than the Chiefs.
Again, this is all for fun. Unlike the HS or College teams this system is supposed to rate, all NFL teams are "equal" in that they have the same pool to choose from "enrollment" is the same, divisions are equal.
One of these days I may add a "points vs victories" differential that would weight the standings to offensive output and defensive capability. :)

oh... and the Bengals did beat the Jets. :)

Beat them down! :D

I meant the Jets being ahead of the Packers,Lions, and even Panthers.I'll give ya the Cowgirls.:D The Colts should be way ahead of the Bungals, they have beaten the 49ers,Seahawks,and Broncos, that has to count for more.

The thing about computer standing is that they take away the "this accomplishment has to count for something" arguments. All that counts is wins and losses by you and vanquished opponents.
An interesting development here in Ohio D2 SW region proves the point. We covered a game where one team (NW) got crushed by another (Harrison) last week. But the way the points broke, Northwest won the home field advantage in the first round of the tournament. They will be hosting the team that beat them (into tiny knight meatballs) only last week!

As it turns out, my team Toledo Whitmer DID make the playoffs after a tough start to the season.
They are in Division 1 I believe.

They played several TOP teams out of Detroit to start the season and lost both I believe, so we'll see how they do in the Ohio Playoffs.
They play Hudson (Cleveland area) on Friday iirc.
I wish these games were on TV somewhere.
Toledo Central will also be a force again this year.

The game is on Saturday @ 7pm. Live TV is tough because of the expense. This site only shows the first playback, but it has links to the TV station so you can get other playback times.
I think TWC/Fox Sports Ohio have exclusive on live coverage of tournament. They also have "first dibs" on the games.

In D1 (Whitmer) there are only two divisions so the top 16 make it. This is how Whitmer got in. Same thing happened with "my" team in the south division. Both your team and mine will probably get their asses handed to them in the first or second round. :)

Maybe, maybe not ...

Whitmer had a rough beginning this year after going to the playoffs and advancing the last 4-5 years, made the finals last year, but as happens, lost alot of players to graduation, took awhile for the new kids to gell, but the look to be playing better now at the right time of the year.
We'll see, sometimes they do well other times they go down quickly.

Had it not been for losing all the players they did, they would have been much higher again ...

Toledo Central is the one from this area I expect to go far this year.

Thanks for the link.

As for the TV, I don't get BCSN seeing I have Directv, bcsn is a local sports network on the local cable company, I see the game is scheduled to show at 3 am, I doubt that I will be up to watch and have no way to record it.

Now, Fox Sports Ohio is another option, I was able to see games that way last year, however, it is pretty much centered on the Cleveland area as thats where the network is from.
Whitmer was on FS Ohio for thier last two games last year in the playoffs.
One a win and the last one a loss, I believe it was the final game of the year.
I always thought that they played the Finals at the Horseshoe, but apparently not, I believe it was in like Akron or there abouts, thus giving the Cleveland team a decided advantage in support.

Whitmer spent billions on a first class field and improvements to host playoff games, but I don't think they have been able to play there yet.

I know they were hoping to host different rounds of playoffs there, not sure if it's happened or not.

Ohio HS finals have been played in Massilon and Canton for decades, much to the displeasure of the southern half of Ohio. Joke is that the OHSAA thinks the state line is a line that runs from Just north of Oxford (Talawanda school dist) through, Middletown, Wilmington and Athens, to Marietta.
All 7 Championship final games will be on Fox Sports Ohio/Time Warner Cable (in southern Ohio) starting Thursday after TG through Sat. They have exclusive rights. Starting in 2015 the finals move to Crew Stadium in Columbus for a "trial run".
As I mentioned before BGSC will playback the game many times. 3 am is just the first scheduled playback.
As the tournament progresses in the next 5 weeks, the choices get smaller and smaller and I'm sure if Whitier (a definite underdog) survives the first two rounds, it will be featured for the last three.

More fun numbers after week 11.
I must be bored because I am currently compiling the game scores to do a scoring differential.

Though I don't like it because it drops my Bengals several slots, this may be a little more accurate rating. It takes into account the "score differential". A percentage of points scored vs points allowed is added to the raw score giving me these results. I'll try a few other permutations.
Once again, the idea behind this is to rate teams with equal W-L records.

Whenever I listen to people talking about NFL football, the conversation invariably turns to how tough one team's schedule is versus other teams in different conferences and divisions. I haven't been motivated enough to play with the numbers, to compute the standings, but I wonder if it wouldn't be more interesting to the fans if playoff berths weren't determined strictly by W-L records, but by you W-L AND how difficult your schedule really was, the Harbin Point System. Of course there would be no L3 points or divisors since everyone is at the same level.

For those not familiar with the Harbin system, it was devised by Coach Harbin here in Ohio to figure out why some undefeated High School teams would not make it to the state championships. It is an ingenious calculation that nearly always predicts the better team in a match, and is great to use for seeding a play-off bracket.

Basically you get a certain amount of points for a win. You get a certain amount of points for a win by a team you beat in the same season. Divide the points by the number of games and you have your team average score. You get no points for a loss and no points if a team you beat loses to other opponents. After a few weeks you get to see a separation among teams that may have identical W-L records.

What would this mean for the league? Teams that really have a rough schedule still have a shot at the playoffs even with crappier records. It would keep more people interested in the playoff hunt all the way to the very last games. It is highly unlikely a team with a great record would get screwed because of the limited league, meaning that L2 points would be guaranteed at some point. But if your whole division sucks, your 6-0 division record won't be worth as much as a win against a division that is otherwise undefeated!

Just a fun exercise. I know it will never happen, but it's fun to think about who would edge who out if difficulty of schedule were a factor.

UGH..Lets not get complicated.

It's really not all that complicated. Once again, this would be to differentiate teams with equal W/L records, and it's just for fun. This week there are two pair of teams with statistically identical scores. Only a few thousands of a point separate them.

After one of the most boring MNF of the season (no more weighting needed since all teams are at 11 games played):

This is the first week where the strength of schedule actually makes a difference in the standings. In a few circumstances, teams with more wins are actually ranked a little lower. If you beat all the teams you play, but they don't have 10 wins among them, you will be ranked lower than a team with more losses than you but their wins come against teams that beat everyone else!

So, in my make-believe playoff race if the season were to end today here are the teams that would make it to the play-offs. No byes, 16 teams in 4 week play-off. This week's numbers aren't complete and there could be a little change lower in these 16 teams depending on tomorrow's game.
