Why So Many Current 301 Receiver Versions?

Why are there three different current versions of the 301 receiver software?

Why I ask: I had two 301's with 2.05. One needed replaced and apparently I got one with 2.29 on it. I'm now confused and don't know which is better... if there is any real difference.

Will the 301's ever be brought to ONE software revision?

I believe that there are two different editions of the 301. One of the editions has two different software versions for it (one in limited release and the other in wide release) while the other edition has one software version (in wide release) for a total of three. Something like this:

301.xxx: Limited-release software and wide-release software
301.yyy: Wide-release software

I can't remember the specific hardware numbers so I used xxx and yyy as substitutes.

The two versions are 301-010 and 301-013.

There can be as many as four public-release versions at a time. For each, the "old" or current one, and the "new" one that is in staged rollout. Once the rollout is complete, "new" becomes "old", and we're back to one version for the given suffix (-010 or -013).
