I don't know what Voom had in mind to do the upgrade, but on the Voom forum, this idea was tossed out: Why doesn't Voom just mail out to all its subs the module, instructions, and let them install their own upgrade. Those that cannot for whatever reason can generate a service call.

Also why wouldn't Voom start upgrading people's dish as of now? Like with every service call?

Very curious minds want to know. ;)

Until Voom can put a signal on W6 there is no way to find the satellite. I think Voom will have to mail out the modules. Could you imagine the cost to Voom for the service calls. If you recall Dish had a self install program for it's 6000 HD STB's

Well the capability to implent it starts October, which is why I said mail out modules beforehand. 20,000 service calls is quite a bit... most of us can turn a screw driver and slide in a module.

RE: [VOOM] 20,000 VOOM customers?

Is that the current # of subscribers? 20,000 ? Earlier this year someone
said it was less than 2,000.

Early this year it may well have been less than 2000. When companies offer free installation and discounts they tend to get many new subscribers which leads to an expansion of their customer base over time. In addition, money can be exchanged for goods and services (including peanuts).

When I de-installed the installer told me that he has a 25% attrition rate on VOOM.

There are some occasional feeds and a couple FTA channels on AMC-6 so a dish can already be aimed there using standard MPEG-2 equipment.

They had a test pattern on there about a year ago, but it is now gone.
There are a couple of digicypher stations on there for occasional
feeds.
