$20 for HD is nuts

Hey all,

I've been trying to decide about dishin up to a 622 or 722, but I just can't pull the trigger...even after the wife approved it. :eek: I just can not justify $20 extra to a bill that is damn near $70 now, just for HD. Most of the HD I watch is OTA any way, and from reading the threads the Dish HD is not all that great of a picture . Dish , and Direct, should just toss in HD to the reg packages. They are not being charged any more for the HD versions of channels that they carry in SD. I could see maybe $10 bones but $20 is just nuts.

My 2 cents:

1. Don't believe everything you read. HD looks good from my 622 on my 92" screen.
2. You are wasting $20 a month on something. Change who gets it.
3. Don't look at the line item cost. Compare complete service packages from all providers. They are for the most part equal. That's not an accident.

Call Dish and tell them what you want but can't pull the trigger because it just seems to be too high. They are giving 6 months free HD, see if you can get half off for 12 months instead.

My PQ is fine; for $20, I get about 50 channels, plus a ton of extra PPV and sports channels. All a questions of what is a priority for you. For me, HD is a priority. I HATE SD, and Dish gives me what I want.

add to that the ability to archive movies recorded onto an external hard drive, and I am a happy camper.

I agree. HD is a priority for me also. If I wanted better sd quality I would have stayed with Charter.
 
I don't know what anyone else thought, but I couldn't believe the incredible picture quality this week for college basketball coverage on ESPN-HD. :up
 
Look at it as spending 66 cents to be able to watch all the HD channels per day. How can you sit in front or your big screen HD knowing that for less than a dollar, you could be watching HD.
 
Sorry - can't understand spending big, big bucks for a HDTV, and then going cheap on programming, thereby making the original big bucks purchase null & void. Just doesn't make sense to me....
 
I think the point is that HD will soon become the norm and not the exception as each year passes- ARe we still going to pay $20.00 to see it in the future? I think that DIrectv has taken the correct approach and allows you to get any hd channels that are simulcast in sd in the programming pack you have complete with locals and ota. Now any channel that isn't simulcast in sd, but is in hd, is put into its own hd pack and sold seperately. They simply charge a tech fee for 9.99.

Now I think DISH should do something similiar. They could include the channels not simulcast in sd as part of AEP-HD pack. Then the price would be included as part of the pack. They would most likely up the price of AEP-hd about 10.00 . Then they could charge anyone with an hd receiver a hd tech fee of say 9.99. IF you sub to a pack with hd channels or locals you get them in hd and ota stations too -( NO extra price for ota)

But evenutally they need to work the tech fee out entirely or make it part of the programming pack itself. There is no reason for anyone to have to keep paying for an hd receiver, once hd is the norm and not the exception as is today. The only reason why they are doing this now is because Hd is considered a premium today. Remember when Discover -hd theater was sold for 7.99 by itself a few years ago? Does anyone think that they can still charge that price today for one channel?
 
YEAH i remember! haha its just a premium you get at you on choice if its too much dont get i spent 4200 on a t.v. and not to spend the money to see it in hd would be very sad hd will be the norm come soon so you can wait it out
 
The price won't go down. Bank on that. People are willingly giving the providers their $15 or $20 extra a month now for HD. When it becomes "normal" the providers can change the name of the packages and "cut" the extra fees, but they'll simply be built in to the package price.

When's the last time your phone bill went down? Or your gas bill? Electric? Ok so those are utilities and may not be fair in comparison. So pick a service that you have that's not a utillity and think about when is the last time they REDUCED the price.

I'm going to hazard a guess here that 99.9% of you can't come up with an example. No service provider, REGARDLESS of the service, will willingly throw away revenue. They just won't.

So if teh point of all this is to just not see the extra fees on your bill. Well.... what's the point if you're still giving them that money?

TimeWarner in Austin is making a big thing advertising that their HD is free. When you look at their web site not completly true, if you want the HD only channels like HDNet you pay extra but for the HD versions of the SD channels no charge.
 
The point is FiOS TV and others do not charge an "extra" HD Fee to view HD programming...the rate is built into their regular programming packages. Let's face it...HD is no longer a "Premium" services - it is part of the digital TV experience. I fully expect to see both D* and E* drop their HD Programming fees next year and raise the regular subscription rates a few bucks. It you have an HD receiver - you receive the HD version of the programing you have already paid to receive. (TNT, TBS, LMN, CNN, etc.) ;)

Paying $20 for DishHD is outrageous...especially when you consider at least $5 or more of that is being spend on VOOM.:eek:

I further predict E* will roll all the cable favorites (TNT, TBS, LMN, CNN, etc.) into thier appropriate programming package (AT100, AT200, AT250) and create a seperate VOOM Programming Pack for $4.95.

Of course, I have been wrong before...:eek:

OK... but like I said... you can call the package whatever you want and you can get rid of the fees if you want. The dollar value for a particular service is what it is and it's already proven that people who want it will pay for it.

This is that pig in a prom dress I was talking about :)

Stupid threads are stacked like cord wood in The Pit. I don't see anything stupid about discussiong the merits of everone sharing the costs of HD programming and making it available to all.

I am not sure why you find this thread so stupid...or why you would participate in something you find to be so idiotic.:confused:
 
Do I think $20.00 is too much for the Hd package? YES.

Out of all the providers, Dish Network is the one that charges the most for HD. Comcast charges $7.00 and Directv $9.99 for HD. Directv will raise it to $14.99 but they have more channels to back it up. Don't really know about the other cable providers. Why does Dish Network still charges $20.00?

Will I continue to pay for it? Yes, because I want it but the moment I need to cut on expenses the HD package is the first one to go.
