Lockport, NY (Buffalo Suburb)
My understanding is both of these transponders went spotbeam with DC and Philly last week.

The question is, in my area (Buffalo NY) I am out of the beam that covers NYC and Philly. HOWEVER, I confirmed tonight I do lock into TP 11, this is the transponder that covers philly.

Does this mean that I will be able to pull in NYC HD locals when NYC goes spotbeam? I think this is the case since Philly and NYC are in the same beam accoring to the 61.5 spotbeam map, located here: http://ekb.dbstalk.com/e12spots.pdf.

Am I correct in assuming if I were NOT in the beam I wouldnt be able to lock in a signal?

If you're getting TP 11 as a spotbeam then you're under a spotbeam somewhere. Remember, multiple transponders are contained in one spotbeam. Now you just have to figure out what beam you are under.

Getting "as a spotbeam". I dont understand. I get TP 11, but nothing that says "spotbeam".

TP 11 will be used over and over in different areas. You will have to find out which TP 11 you are seeing. If you are near Philly, it is probably the Philly one.

I suspect one of the updates will get around to tidying up the point dish on 61.5 to say spotbeam.

In Buffalo, it is going to be SB 3 or SB 10. What are your levels and do they change at night? I ask because in my neck of the woods, I get SB TPs off of 119 between 11pm-3am on a constant basis, but once the crack of dawn comes around those SB TPs go bye-bye, so my suggestion before you do anything is make sure you are getting a constant signal. You should also find out which SB you are in (maybe its time to try and make a 'move') and if it is SB3 for you, get a bigger dish pointed at 61.5 to boost the SB TP, since Buffalo is probably in the fringe of SB3 if that map by Cablevision holds true today.

Even if you are getting a lock on the TP, you could be getting signal that is carrying over from another satellite. The best way to 100% confirm you are getting TP 11 on the SB is to put foil on all the other LNBs and make sure they are getting zero signal. If you are still getting TP 11 then you are good.

Also, are you getting any other SB TPs for area #3?

On the point dish screen, the word 'transponder' changes to the word 'spot beam'. I do not believe the spotbeams in this area are being used yet. Testing now will give you no info.

Thanks, that is important info. I did not know that. I was just checking the transponder. It sounds like I have to deal with not knowing if i'll be able to grab the NYC beam until NYC goes spotbeam.

I was thinking since I got a locked singal on TP 11, that meant I was covered.
