Cablevision Systems Corporation & Holdings

Cablevision's Rainbow Media Holdings LLC
Rainbow Media is a subsidiary of Cablevision

Brands: AMC, IFC, WEtv, LifeSkool, SportsKool, Voom HD Networks, News 12, and Sundance Channel (On May 7, 2008, Rainbow Media announced that it has purchased Sundance Channel for $496 million).

At one point, Voom HD was a start-up DBS provider which attempted to directly compete with DirecTV and Dish/Echostar. In 2005, Echostar purchased Voom’s satellite (Rainbow 1) from Cablevision for $200 million. Echostar affiliate, Echostar Media Holdings, received a 20% stake in Voom HD as part of the sale; Voom-Echostar affiliation agreement was reached as a result of the transaction.

Cablevision's Print Media Holdings

Newsday is a daily tabloid-size Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper servicing Long Island and the New York City borough of Queens, although it is sold throughout the New York City metropolitan area. As of fall 2007, Newsday's weekday circulation of 387,000 ranks it 10th-highest in the United States, as well as one of the highest for a suburban newspaper publication. Melville, New York (Long Island), is the publication's headquarters.

You forgot to mention VOOM HD Networks which is 80% Rainbow and 20% EchoStar. Of course, with E* terminating the affiliation/distribution agreement...your guess is as good as mine as what happens to their 20% ownership.

Valid point, but I'm having great difficulty validating Dish/Echostar indeed owns part of Voom HD Holdings LLC. I'm still researching.

They do check the news stories from the period of yime when they purchased many of the VOOM assets.

I did find the following...

Cablevision's board voted in February to sell the Rainbow 1 satellite to EchoStar for $200 million. That's where the $200 million figure comes from. At this juncture, I can find no evidence of Dish/Echostar having any ownership in Voom HD Holdings LLC.

If you may recall, Voom HD was originally a DBS provider competing directley with both DirecTV and Dish for a short while. The venture failed after shareholder's demanded the operation be shuttled to curve losses.

In my opinion, Voom HD DBS was prematurly launched and was mismanged. In particular, accounts recievable, payable were out of balance. Approximately 50% of Voom's DBS subscribers weren't paying their bills.

I was a Voom HD DBS customer.

You found the link to the association...

"In 2005, Echostar bought Voom’s satellite from Cablevision for $200 million. Echostar affiliate, Echostar Media Holdings, got a 20% stake in Voom HD as part of that sale. And the Voom-Echostar affiliation agreement also flowed out of that transaction."

Updating original post. Thanks, Geronimo!
