50 CHANGE(S) 5061 CHANNELS IN THE SYSTEM

Both E-1 and E-2 are old but rumors here support calling them dieing with no real reports of failure including recent Dish/SATS financial reports.

Based on the channel number, I would guess that 9904 is a slate saying "Congratulations you are pointed at 148"

They changed a lot of MPEG4 SD to MPEG4 HD on some even transponders on E2 yesterday.

I think DISH is up to something with this slot. Perhaps they're going to mirror a bunch of HD for HI and AK.

The dish 1000.2 hits 148/129 perfectly as I've done it in trial here. A satellite at 138 would fit perfect to that dish as well. Consequently, Ciel in Canada (DISH leases 129 from them) received broadcasting consent from 138. Ciel has expressed interest in leasing out up to 50% of the capacity there.

I took a look with the BLSA. Transponders 6, 17 and 31 have been turned off recently. Transponders 28, 30 and 32 have been off for a long time.

The also added an MPEG2 SD channel to a Texas local package which is on E*2 at 148 yesterday, so my first guess - that E*2 is moving - is clearly wrong.

It would be interesting for us Westerners to see a bunch of MPEG4-HD at 148 !

PS Did you move from Las Vegas to Phoenix (I'm guessing... ) ?

Ciel is a long way from getting a satellite up at 138w... let them get 129w going first!

What you are implying is that 148 W will be part of the Western Arc. That can't be because it is contrary to the "rumors".:D

I moved from Vegas to Georgia for a year before coming to Phoenix. Wish I was still in Georgia though, wife brought me here.

Ciel has a license to use 138. They could easily do what they did with 129 and allow DISH to park a bird there until they get one over there. If it became necessary as a matter of requirement, DISH could consolidate all uplinks on 148 to just E1 and move E2 over there until Ciel gets their own bird there. It wouldn't mean any additional transponders in the meantime, but if the Canadian equivalent of the FCC has a "use it or lose it" policy, DISH could be very helpful to Ciel in that regard.

I don't see why 148 couldn't be a part of a Western Arc. 129/138/148 can be gained with current technology. No new dishes to be engineered, just use the 1000.2. With as many apartments that you have in places like L.A., Phoenix, SF, L.V., etc, an Eastern Arc, central arc, and Western Arc would bring about line of sight to many places that didn't previously have it before.

Here's a pic of a switch test showing a 1000.2 picking up 129/148 on the same Triple LNB.

As I mentioned, Dish just moved a new channel to E*2 yesterday, and they changed transponders to MPEG4-HD, so they wouldn't bother with that if they were clearing E*2.

What seems likely is that once Ciel2 is on-line at 129, Dish would move E*5 to 138.

Yes, people complain about E*5, but it would make a fine "placeholder" satellite, just as E*4 is doing at 77W.

I think they would have to send someone up there to push that thing over there. I'm not sure it could make it on its own.

There's no need to move E2 over to 138 since there would be no gain in transponders. However, if Ciel was under a "use it or lose it" requirement, Dish could move E2 there and operate from that location. They could put E5 over there, but as crippled as E5 is, that bird is pretty close to needing to go to graveyard orbit soon. I don't know if it has the fuel to make the move 10 degrees.

Well its been reported that Dish hgas a deal with both Ciel & BEV to use 13TRS art 138 with Ciel & 16 TRS with BEV at 72.5. As to what there going to use these for I don't know.

E1 and E2 are nearing end of design life. They were launched in 1996 so are 12 years old. Not to mention they started out at 119, and had to use fuel to move to 148. I doubt they will be moved again except into a junk orbit when they run out of fuel. They appear to have been pretty reliable compared to other Echostar satellites.

Echostar will have to build a replacement satellite for 148 soon. I doubt they were launched with more than 15 years worth of fuel and they were moved once, so probably 2 years or less on fuel. Given the launch delays they better act fast.

One good use for 148 would be to mirror 110/119 channels in MPEG4 for AK/HI like they appear to be going to do on 72.7. Interesting that they have 16 TPs at 72.7 and are going to have 1 satellite, or 16 TPs cleared at 148... Perhaps mirror 72.7 to 148...

If you are referring to KIDZ, it is a very strange addition to 148 indeed. It is a low power ultra-local station with variable network affiliations in the recent past.

Minor conforming activity:

UPLINK ACTIVITY: SAMPLE TAKEN 06-12-2008 18:46:59 TO 06-12-2008 18:48:03 ET

1 CHANGE(S)

CHNG 8177 KIDZ MPEG4 SD Tp 7 Spot 13 Rainbow 1 61.5w UNAVAIL HIDE
TO 8177 KIDZ{ABILENE, TX} MPEG4 SD Tp 7 Spot 13 Rainbow 1 61.5w UNAVAIL HIDE MAP 42

1 CHANGE(S) 5061 CHANNELS IN THE SYSTEM
And then they fix the map down of this channel on 61.5 where it is among the host of other MPEG4 SD locals that are not available
