Hey all. I have been a Dish Network customer for a few years. At this point I have 2 standard def. Tv's in my house. One in the living room, and one in my bedroom. I have the dual tuner DVR right now, AND I LOVE IT!!!!!! It is the greatest thing since sliced bread to me. I have 1 receiver in the living room and it controls both the living room TV and the one in my bedroom, and both TV's can use the DVR function. Anyway, I am in the market for 2 new TV's. I am making the leap to HD! I did a little looking on the Dish Networksite today....and I can't find what I am looking for. All I want is for everything in my setup to function JUST AS IT DOES NOW, but in HD and with full DVR use on BOTH TV's. The only box I can find on the Dish site says that it will control 2 TV's, but only 1 in HD. The other will be standard definition. This is going to be useless for me as what is the point of having an HD TV with standard def hooked up to it? I need a dual tuner full HD box. I want to keep the dual tuner thing going because I am going to hang a plasma in my bedroom on the wall, and I don't want to have a box up there with wires hanging out all over the place. Am I going to have to get 2 separate boxes? I would really hate that.

You are probably looking at the 722. If so, it has the ability to work in Dual and Single Mode. It has Component and HDMI (both are HD Outputs) that are active at the same time. If the bedroom and living room tv are not used simultaneously, then you would be able to hook both HD TVs up at the same time. Another option (if you are only getting one HD set) is to have the box in the living room and run the HD Cable from TV1 to the bedroom, but you will need to purchase a 6.3 Remote that will allow TV1 to become UHF rather then IR.

Otherwise, if you want 2 HD sets hooked up that operate simultaneously, you would need 2 Set Top Boxes.

and with two set top boxes you loose the joy of sharing dvr'd shows. but no big deal. just make sure you program both for the same programs and you're all set.

This is the big miss with Dishnetwork, that they don't have a DUAL HD DVR. I have the same setup, HDTV in Living room, HDTV upstairs in the bedroom, and the need for both TV's to operate independently, but a wish to be able to access DVR recordings in both places.

Can't do it.

So now I have a 622 connected to HDTV 2 via SD coaxial, and no HD upstairs. It is just wrong. The only way to do this successfully is a lot more money and two DVR's, but you still lose the ability to share DVR recorded shows.

Be aware that you will only get true Hd on that second tv if it is fed with component or hdmi cable. It is unrealistic for a company (DNW) to expect any installation to work that way and supply the proper cable to run 40 to 100 feet in component (+ 2 audio) or hdmi. Your best bet is to keep your 622 or 722 dual tuner in the living room and put it in single mode (you then get PIP) and if it is on a working phone line you don't pay the $5 2nd tuner fee. Then call DNW and have a 612 single tuner HD DVR installed in the other room. DNW rules do not allow you to lease 2 612's without 1st having a 622 or 722 on your account.

I hate to ask, but does anybody offer a full HD dual tuner DVR? Another company? Aftermarket?

Nope no other company makes a full HD dual tuner DVR. For that matter E* is the only company that makes a HD dual tuner DVR that can function in two independent locations at the moment. Tivo makes one and so does D* but they're limited to working on one TV set. The only way I can see E* doing something like this in the future is if they can figure out a way to make a cost effective box with an ATSC encoder for the TV2 output. That way they can send out an HD signal on the coaxial output. They haven't as of yet which leads me to believe that either it simply isn't possible currently or that they can't make a cost effective box.

Copy protection concerns prevent them from sending HD signals over coax "in the clear." They could encrypt them, but then your second TV would need a box to decrypt the signal.

I am hoping that the long term solution for this is a slingbox receiver of some sort that will just receive the HD signal. That way it could be encrypted, and you wouldn't have to have a full featured box at the second TV, just a small receiver of some kind.

I am wishing.

It's not a bad wish. First good one to market at a good price will likely clean up!

Nobody makes a DVR that will output HD to two TVs independently. Dish is the only one that makes a DVR that outputs to two TVs (at least one SD) independently at all.

Every other DVR out there that I know of is "single mode" exclusively.

Yep you are right! There best bet would be to link all the boxes to the dvr via ethernet or wireless ethernet, but I doubt they care!

Wired ethernet would be the best bet. Its hard to get standard definition video playing well on an 802.11N network much less high definition. It simply uses too much bandwidth and wireless is a lot more prone to interference.
