Questions about adding second tv to VIP622

I have a couple of quick questions:

1. How do you set up a second tv with this receiver (the second tv is 1 floor up and I would say no more than 20 feet of cable would be needed). Where do I run the cable from? Any special type of cable or splitter, etc?

2. When the wires are connected, are there any specific on screen or any other type of instructions to have them working or the controllers?

3. I am assuming recordings would not be affected . . . is that true?

4. Are there any problems as far as PQ is concerned? The second tv is just SD, but I am concerned that my HDTV (where the 622 is hooked up to now) would lose PQ, sound quality, etc., should I be?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help !

didnt you get an owners manual with that 622? its really all there. with diagrams even.

how come tv2 wasnt connected at time of install?

Long story about not connecting with original install; I can find it out if I locate the manual, but I guess my biggest concerns were q's 3 and 4

I did see the manual online, but its only for connecting to a pre-existing cable system in the house. IN fact, for what I want to do, it says clal a technician. I do not want to do hook into existing cable system; actually just want to run cable directly from the receiver to second tv .

3. your 2nd tuner will still be there to record. your current records wont go away.

4. TV2 will merely be SD. PQ is a matter of opinion. Should be fine though.

If I am reading the manual correctly, is it "technically" difficult just to run a coax directly from the 622 to the other tv?

its as simple as plugging a toaster into the wall outlet. unless of course you need to run the cable thru the walls. THAT can be the tricky part.

the hardest part is setting up your tv to see the picture. take your tvs remote get into its menu and make sure its set to AIR/Antenna and tune it to channel 60.

I know the wall thingy can be tricky, but if my eyes do not deceive me than I see that there may be a solution . . . one last question and again, thanks for all your help . . . can/should I use something like the DYNEX 50' Coaxial A/V Cable from Best Buy? Or just use any "regular" Coaxial Cable?

Again, I assume I plug the cable end into the TV2 out on the 622 and then just plug the other end into the back of TV2 and follow the rest of your instructions above; correct?

one thing to note is that if you are currently using your 622 in single mode, it will have to be in dual mode for 2 TVs. This also means that you cannot watch live Sat. on both TVs while recording. Notice that I said sat, OTA if you have it hooked up is the exception.

no, lets say you are recording ghost hunters on scifi... Most likely you will be able to watch whatever on TV1, but TV2 will be stuck watching ghost hunters (or they can change channel and get the option of stopping the recording).

Now, if you have an OTA Antenna hooked up, you could be watching a local on the OTA, recording Ghost hunters on TV1 and watching something on TV2...

If I am recording only 1 show albeit HD or SD, then I cannot watch Satellite on both TV's?
You can watch whatever you want on the TV (tuner) that is NOT doing the recording if you are in dual mode.

oh that sucks . . . hmmm . . . now that throws a big wrench into the plan :( . . . i guess this is why people get a second receiver such as a VIP 222 . . . how much does having a second receiver cost additionally a month and initially to set up?

if you are not planning on upgrading it to HD then you could buy a 311 which is a single tuner SD box for $100. You may be able to get dish to install if for you depending on what options you have available. It carries a $5 per month receiver fee.

get a 301/311 from a local retailer. usually pretty cheap. i pay around $60

really though. in my house. it's pretty rare that TV2 wants to watch something different then what is being recorded. Heck, it's pretty rare that TV2 is even on.

now TV3 that's a whole different story... :)

Eh, i lost a mythbusters episode that i REALLY wanted to see due to my dad watching TV2...

Here is the issue, In dual mode when i was trying to use it, it would automatically put everything on TV2 (even if i told it not to). My dad is only home on the weekends due to traveling for work so i figure, what the heck, why not let my DVR support 2 TVs. Well he was home one saturday watching TV and it poped up the box to switch to record mode, and instead of letting him switch the recording to TV1 (which i wasnt home or i would have just watched it) it totally skipped the recording. Poor design if you want my opinion on it.

thanks for all the options everybody . . . tv2 actually would be watched a lot by fiancee and her daughter (long story but trying to get rid of cable in the house; yes i am paying over $300/month for dish and cox . . . do not ask!)

To make my life easier, just might order one and have it installed rather than trying to fiddle around myself . . . if I did upgrade the other tv to an HD set and did not need a DVR, how much will an HD receiver run initially and per month?
