It's February, is it time to switch?

Thanks, I have heard they had this in beta and pulled it because of how bad it was or something like that. Good to know it may just happen.
Is a decent VOD implementation coming too?
D* has a nice selection of FREE VOD which is great when you have kids and you don't want them to fill up the DVR with crap. The last time I looked E* only had PPVs and the interface is shameful.
It's good DISH may one day finally have DVR programming via the internet but the way things have looked E*'s receiver may be rock solid but it is also frozen in time. D* has been implementing some pretty neat features and I have heard from a reliable source of at least one that I really have been waiting for just around the corner.
I hope E* has all the same features planned but it sure looks like the D* software development is leaving E*'s in the dust.

Don't you have to wait for them to download?.....and then they take up space on your DVR?

D* has lame VOD, if that's what you want, go with Comcast, now THAT is kickass!

Don't misunderstand me. TWC here in NC is the worst provider ever but their VOD is 10 times better than SAT. That said D*'s VOD is 1000 times better than E*.
My expectations aren't high for VOD that is until it is actually full of HD then catching up on Discovery shows and the like will be nice. All I really want now is a decent selection of FREE VOD content and the genre that would help me out being a single father is some good toons and kid stuff. D*'s VOD may not be the most polished but it is far from lame.
There is absolutely NO comparison between D*'s VOD and E*'s VOD. That was my point. I am pretty sure no one wants to dispute that.

Yea I was testing it at my buddies on some 30 minute cartoons and they were ready to watch in a couple of minutes. We both have have Business Class Cable Internet so DL's are pretty peppy. I know my Netflix HD streaming looks great and my brothers DSL is crap so your milage with this style VOD will vary as well.
But DISH will suffer from the same limitations. I would think D* is working on having it play once enough is in the buffer. But queing up a few shows to dl fits my lifestyle.
Like I said comparing this to Cable VOD is not the point.
Does E* even have one FREE offering? I haven't seen one of course the way their VOD is laid out it might have giving up before I got to it. :(

This Video says D* VOD is "Fantastic" not lame as previously reported. :)

...E* is way behind what Direct TV had HD wise months ago. Yet D* is still adding channels people want to watch where as E* replaced a HD channel with another than 90% of the people that subscribe to E* probably don't care to watch.
Now I will admit E* has been good about adding HD locals but honestly each one they add only affects a small portion of their customers. So for the ones that want national programming in HD well, they just aren't adding it...

You do know that as of last week, Direct only had 3 more national HD channels than Dish, and with the two HD channels added by Dish last night, it is now 1 channel difference...

...Yet while not adding a whole lot people want E* doesn't have a problem raising our rates. This rate increase is one I feel they don't deserve. .

You do know that Direct has announced their own rate increase coming in March, right? Comcast has announced theirs, as has most every other pay tv provider out there...

Can you send me the corresponding DISH HD channel number for the following I must be overlooking them.

Spike
Nickelodeon
Comedy Central
CMT
MTV
VH1
FX
FUEL
Smithsonian

Thanks in advance.

I do know Direct TV is upping their rates too however, they have added some channels. I wouldn't mind a rate increase if new channels came with it. It's when it goes up and I'm getting nothing new that it bugs me.

What 2 channels HD channels did Dish add last night? I wasn't aware of those. Wait just noticed they added Fox News in HD. At least they added something.

We are still waiting for FX, Speed, Spike, Comedy Central, and the channels like that in HD that Dish has yet to add that quite a few people would like to see.

Exactly where are these channels? These are the ones the majority of customers want not some channel that the small minority of customers watches. Well with the exception of Smithsonian and Fuel there. He however, left out Speed.

he didnt say they had the same HD channels... just the same amount (minus 1)
I know, just making a point. :up
However non-premium HD channels are usually the focus of such discussions.
If DISH is leading in the premium- HD realm, I wouldn't know as I only get MAX for a penny and still don't watch it. That is all I would ever pay for a premium, btw.

D*:pLUS HD DVR— Locals Included $72.99
DIRECTV DVR Service $0.00
Lease Fee $4.99
HD Access $0.00
Total:* $77.98
Online redemption -$23.00
---------------------
D* Total:*54.98 (12 month rate)

If you're a Costco member you can see if your local store has the HR2X's there, usually $20 to $40 less. You can also just call DirecTV, tell them you want to switch but the $199 2nd DVR fee is an issue, they might work you a deal.
If you buy a receiver elsewhere or initiate service locally, you don't qualify for the credit.

As of 1/25/09...Direct=69 HD and 15 HD premium/Dish=66 HD and 19 premium HD.

If you can wait til' the end of the week, I'll post most if not all of them. ;)

???
Is it the end of the week yet?
Did you have a reason for thinking that there would be more additions? I figured you probably derived at this notion after reading an ambiguous post by Scott anyway.
I have been here long enough to know what to expect from week to week but it is always entertaining how many true-believers are still left. :)
Nothing personal, just having some fun with your optimism. And I would love to drink some Wild Turkey with my Crow, just don't think it will be anytime this week.

What on these channels are REALLY worth HD Quality?

I am not trying to troll here, but VH1, MTV, and CMT I can kinda get if you are into music.

FX and Spike show a lot of older programming that won't really matter.

Comedy Central, and Nick, I mean, really? That's like Cartoon Network, everyone wanted it, but how much of the material is in HD?

I am with you on Speed. But Speed, Fuel and Smithsonian are pretty niche.

Is it YOU that feels that you deserve these channels because someone else has them? Or do you have a dire need to view these channels in HD?

I am not trying to be a prick here, but I really want to understand what the need for these channels are.

Fox News in HD, people were DYING for this for months. So, now I can see Hannity's comb marks in his head. The show is the same, but really, is that needed? Does it improve the show?

Honestly, I'd swap out FoxNewsHD for speed. But whatever.

I don't think you are a prick. I like to take the emotion out of posting anyway, lots on this board can't.
To answer your question:

SPIKE = I LOVE MMA!!! There is another UFC Fight Night this Saturday on Spike in HD for those with D* and in SD for those with E*. Live sporting events 2 seasons of The Ultimate Fighter each year and more UFC centric shows coming. And from everything I have seen Spike is trying to position itself as the Mans network. I don't watch a lot that is not UFC on there, but that may have to do with me being the HD snob that I have become. Anybody that wanted MOJO-HD should be happy with SPIKE-HD.

Nickelodeon = for the kid. If I am going to put up with Nick being on when I am watching tv with my daughter it has to be HD. Lot's of us are eyeing or already moved to the HD only package, so this is a must.

CMT = I love me some redneck women. :) I like to have CMT on when I am cooking or cleaning or would normally have some tunes on. To tell you the truth MTV and the rest would not get much face time with my tv. I guess I brought those up just as a proof of D* being the HD leader and E* giving up.

Smithsonian = Hey I liked it. Just like Discovery and NatGeo, there isn't always good stuff on but one more channel like that gives me more options.

Hey I don't even know what is on FX. I know some of the HD channels that I do get don't get watched. I don't care about Speed or Fuel but some do. DISH can't make everbody happy, but it seems that they have given up on making anybody happy. Spike is my deal breaker and I will watch the next season of TUF in HD here or on D*.

It's not the quality of the HD on these channels that's the issue. Currently, by not having these channels, quite a few subs cannot move to the cheaper all-HD Turbo packages. The Turbo packages have significantly fewer channels at higher costs per channel than the Classic Packs.
