Well, at least you're taking the next step in trying to find a better dog food.
You're right about Kibble's and Bits. It's probably one of the worst foods you could feed a dog. Full of by-products, fillers and very little to no real meat source. By feeding a dog this type of food, you'll only be looking at possible medical bills down the line due to food related health issues. K&B is like eating a Big Mac for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
And to KAT, don't always trust the Vet. My Vet recommended a well known name brand dog food and it turned out to be crap as well and was one of the foods that were recalled a while ago. Often times, Vets get paid from dog food companies to recommend a certain type of food and get kick backs for doing so.
My best advise is to read the label. Look for real meat (turkey, beef, poultry, etc) to be listed as one of the first sources. Look for food with little to no corn, corn meal, wheat, rice, etc. Also, avoid the foods that have ingredients with the words "meal", "byproduct" or "meat."
Animal by-product is rendered product from animal tissues, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents.
"Meat" is often rendered dogs and cats as well as other animals such as road-kill. When the source of the meat is known it will be listed as beef, poultry, chicken, turkey, etc. If the source of the meat is not known it is simply called "meat".
