Why would an existing EHD suddenly say it needs to be reformatted? Also says that if I do I will lose all existing data. What can I do to not lose about 100 recordings?

been there done that

When I went to the new 722k I had a HDD that said the same thing. I called in and went thru all kinds of hoops and the csr still made me do it and I lost everything. CEO got an email after that and got my OTA module for the unit free. So if you call in don't do it just go to high tech support until you get advanced tech and maybe they will get it right.

Before you do it, call Dish and have them send a housecode ping to your receiver. It's possible that the receiver lost it's housecode and if so, the EHD won't be recognized and ask to be reformatted.

By your message I assume that you only have one receiver and didn't move the EHD?

If that's not it, don't panic, it's not a big deal on an EHD to access it via Linux and copy off the programming. You can then put it back after a reformat.
You can't play the programming as it's encrypted, but the EHD somehow screwed up but Linux can mount it you can get the programming off of it. Then I'd chuck the EHD, get a newer one and put the programming back.

Do a search on here for for posts that reference the 'disharc' (I think that's what it's called) directory. That the Linux directory that your shows are stored in.

I had the same problem, yesterday I unplugged my external hard drive from the wall and my reciever reset it came back and said it was checking for compadability when that was done I whent into DVR
and all my recordings where still there. :)

I have had the issue in the past and simply pressed cancel, unplugged the USB cable and plugged it back in. Took about 5 seconds and everything was normal.

If that happened to me, I'd unplug the drive from the receiver, let it cool down if needed, and then connect it to a Linux VM running on my Windows 7 box and fsck the two file systems there. The reformat is probably unnecessary, and fsck'ing the file systems yourself is safer than letting the 211 attempt a non-interactive repair.

LOOL..
BILL , when he connected his EHD to his new 722K box says it needs to reformat
Not the DVR hard drive or existing boxes EHD connections!!

Last month, I had one of my EHD suddenly report it needed to be reformatted. I checked it on my other DVR's and had the same result. But all my other EHD (I currenly use 6 with my DVR's) continued to work. Did a check out of the disk with the vendors' tools from my PC and it showed no problem even with a complete check of all sectors. It included a basic version of FSCK. So obviously some sort of data corruption had occurred. Be nice if DISH had some better tool to try and recover a disk, but probably will not happen. Ended up letting it reformat disk.

Perhaps I'll try the mentioned version of FSCK next time.
