This is the only channel I really want on top of my regular programing. Can you get it Al la Carte in SD or HD? I would add HD but not Silver package rates.

You cannot add it a la carte. It's a Silver Package channel. Dish currently does not offer it in HD, although the HD channel is in the test phase.

No service provider, except for one (CableVision or TWC in New York only?) offers BBC America HD. Also, the channel/content providers do NOT like being offered a la carte as it means fewer potential viewers and that decreases what they can charge for advertising. Dish Network and a fair number of subscribers would love a la carte for all channels, but when you really think about it, it won't really be that good for consumers nor diversity (ethnic: SiTV, Mun2, BET, et al.) of channels and a lot of beloved channels that do just well enough on the current tiered system would be GONE and out of business on an a la carte system. I doubt Science Channel could survive in a la carte unless Discovery Channels bundled it with their high performing channels, but then it is no longer a la carte and folks would resent paying for the other Discovery Channels when all they want is the one and only Discovery Channel. Would anyone care to guess what Disney/ABC would charge per month just for ESPN? (I'm thinking $20 per month) Oh, but, no, for the really high price they would bundle ESPN, ESPN2, and all the other ESPN's and then you are back with the original mess.

Dish has hd BBC America HD up and running for the last 4 months now... they just have not made it available to customers... yet...

Stay Tuned.

So all this technology and we can't get a custom channel list.:rant:ABC can keep their ESPN!! I'll get my neighbor to get The Science channel and BBC and I'll run ESPN to them. This is why people steal.

Chances are if your neighbor gets BBC and The Science Channel, he gets ESPN, also BECAUSE THESE CHANNELS ARE NOT OFFERED ALA CARTE!

i don't think that technology is the issue. Are there any cable operators that offer ala carte service?

Anyone who thinks a la carte will bring about lower programming prices has no idea how these packages are negotiated.

Yeah, ESPN News would die, but ESPN (and maybe ESPN2) by itself would be $15-20/mo.

Look to the premium channel prices to see about what you'd be paying per channel. No, I'm very happy with my Dish bill. It's cheaper than AT&T U-verse, Time Warner and likely DirectTV. (I have all four as options, so I definitely don't consider Dish to be the king gouger.)

Actually Cox in Tulsa offers BBCA-HD and ESPN U-HD. I just can't stand the motorola dvr boxes or I would consider bundling Cox tv with my internet when I move to my new house in a few weeks. As it is I will remain with Dish as I have for the last 10 years.

Hey just an FYI - the other night I was in our local K-Mart & at the check-out, they had single-page slick DISH brochures, folded in 1/2. I picked one up as I walked out, as I thought it was interesting they had these in a K-mart. (it was obviously from DISH itself, but you called an 800# & gave them the K-mart store#, which was stamped on the brochure)
Anyway, the inside top 1/2 page had a channel list of every basic channel available on AT250 & also indicated which ones were in HD - then the bottom 1/2 page had a list of every channel in DL Max. Interestingly, while BBC-A did NOT have an HD logo next to it in the top section, it DID have an HD logo in the DL Max listings - hmm...

Agreed. I switched last year to Dish from Cox cable. You want to talk about getting nickel and dimed - I have more programming with Dish, more HD channels, and a DVR that is about 100000000Xs better for $30 less per month. Never mind the fact that Cox tiers their digital programming in such a way that you will often pay $10 a month extra just so you can have access to one channel that should have damn well been in a different tier to begin with.

I'm happy to be forced to pay for 20 home shopping channels and 500 Christian broadcasting networks, if it means that I get BBC-A, G4, Science, and Bio.

This is good to hear. I hope they make it available when they start showing the new Dr. Who.

Manzelmo,

Doctor Who will not air in England until late March or early April. BBC America usually delays the US Premieres for at least a few weeks.

I highly Doubt BBC America will not be available Dish Subs by the end of February, in fact I'd bet BBC America is available to subs by the second week of February at the latest.
