Hi,

Greetings to all members!
I'm new to satellite tv and may ask some dumb questions so please bear with me. I have been a cable subscriber for as long as I can remember. I have decided to give it a try (satellite that is) and have been asking around for any info I can get. I live in the US Virgin Islands on the island of St. Thomas a hop and a leap east of Puerto Rico.

I have been told that I would need a 4 feet dish minimum to start with or I will not get any service. The local DishNetwork reps. do not install system so I decided to go it alone. I have spoken to DN sales people who said if I can get the equipment setup they will provide the service but it would be some kind of special something. I can't remember what they refer to it as.

I have purchased a VIP722 receiver and just need a helping hand with what dish I would need to buy to work with it for my location. There is a guy on St. Croix another of the islands here in the USVI who told me that what I buy will not work but he refused to provide service on St. Thomas or even sell me equipment no strings attached.

I would like to have HD service and only need two tv connections.
Am I in over my head?

Thanks for any and all information anybody can help me with.

I am surprised that there are not local dealers there that can help with the startup. I think you would get more of a response with a different subject line. You need to mention Virgin Islands in the subject so others near you will see your thread and help. If you cannot change your thread subject (too much time may have gone by) perhaps you can hit the stop light on your first post and ask to have a moderator change it for you.

It appears that no one can help me.

Thanks
Welcome to Satellite Guys! Maybe the right person hasn't seen your post. I can't tell you what you need myself, but if no one else answers, go back to the dish network forum, look to the right and click on search this forum, type in puerto rico dish or st thomas dish and your answers may show up.:)

Well from what I have seen in PR....the installation is 4 foot for 119 & 30 in for 110 (& there is speculation that once 119 gets new Sat working latter this year....119 will also be small dish & maybe finally a Dish 500 solution where 1 small dish get both sat).

U will probably get the PR/USVI HD package...which ATM is 29HD channels (again the count is supposed to go up with new SAT at 119 latter this year).

Abt installing the antennas & pointing them correctly...then some of the more experiened Sat guys here need to help since I m myself noob in it & had it done by installers.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm now feeling a lot better. The problem with packages for Puerto Rico are that most of the programs are in spanish. Dish Network said they would activate the service if I had the equipment setup and ready. But the service would not be under the discounted services and special features they provide. I'm more concerned about having a dish that works in my area with HD reception. Latitude 18.35 Longitude 64.93.

From another member on the board who is in Puerto Rico says its 4 foot for 119 and 2 foot dish for 110. Dish put up spotbeams that cover PR and carry most of the HD on there so the smaller dish works fine

Welcome to Satelliteguys!

Thanks Iceburg for the message! Well in PR like Rajmarie and Iceburg has already said for a 119 you will be okay with a 4 footer, 110 you can go as small as a 2footer you will get a pretty good signal! 33 HD Channels on that Spotbeam!
61.5 with a 5.5 above no lower than this!

Best Regards!

I can get a used 4' dish to buy. So my next question is what LNBF model do I buy to work with my vip722 receiver? I am not skimpy on price.
And I must say thanks to all for their generosity.

ps

Is the "DISH 1000.2 Dishpro Plus LNBF" a good buy?

In PR we use Legacy setup...ie LNB, switches etc. But heard reports recently that Dish had approved DP setup here.

I dont know if u can get both 119 & 110 from 1 dish...although some like nel above have reported to use 1 dish to get both sat (u will still need 2 LNB though).

Once u have the Dish setup done.....& since u already have 722...the rest should be easy provided Dish activate ur box. As Nel said...u can get abt 33 HD channel currently (& it should be around 60 later in the year with new SAT at 119 as I mentioned above)

Can I get specific model numbers?
Thanks

Also I think it's best to buy a LBNF right?

What about this?

Eagle Aspen 270 Ku Band Dual Output Linear LNBF
Considered a linear polarity LNBF and is commonly used in FTA/Ku Band or International satellite installations. Replacement lnbf for Andrew, Channel Master, Primestar and Globecast E70, E75 and E84 series antennas.Replaces a single output LNBF. The Eagle Aspen is a twin-switched 270 KU dual output LNBF meaning each port is capable of voltage switching (13 Vdc = Vertical Polarization & 18 Vdc = Horizontal Polarization), from the receiver. The advantage of this type of LNB it no longer needs a mult-switch splitter for two receiver installations, simply run a coaxial cable from the LNB directly to the receiver(s).

Specifications:

  • Eagle Aspen 270KU
  • Dual Output Digital KU Linear LNBF
  • Input Freq: 11.7-12.2 GHz
  • Ouput Freq: 950-1450 MHz

Thanks Iceburg for the message!
no problem. Figured instead of playing the "maybe" game, get someone who is somewhat local and can help out ;)

yay! my memory isnt that bad then :)

[61.5 with a 5.5 above no lower than this!

good to know

Sport,
I install Dish on St Croix and could have comped you that 722 but Dish would charge $200 as an upgrade. As far as lnbs go if you only need the one 722 and don't mind running 2 cables you can use 2 legacy lnbs and a bracket on one 4 ft dish. Then install 2 sw 21s for switching.

Don't forget that the 722 is a duo and requires 2 feeds or you require Dish Pro Plus switch. You also must have 110 to get the HD pac.

Also remember that we are here trying to make a living so when someone calls and says I bought a used dish and already have my receiver...........................
Don't get me wrong. I'll certainly help out if you want to hire me. It's just that some dealers feel it's a waste of time.

Strange enough sky I did the right thing first. I called dish and asked for the local dealers before I started buying. I got one number on st. thomas. I called that number for about two weeks with no results. It would either be busy or just ring. I got an answering machine one time that stated only people who were paying bills they could deal with. Then I called back dish and they gave me another number. This one was a st. croix (stx) number. I called the number and got a guy who said because he was on stx he could not provide the service but he could give me a number of someone who could do the installation if I bough the equipment. I called dn again to ask if I had the equipment if they will provide the service and they said yes.

The guy on stx even told me that the service I get would not include special offers and payments would have to be up front.
