Dish Network Tuner Limitations

Hey everyone,

I'm currently leasing two VIP 622's connected to four tvs in my house. This works out really well, as two of my tvs are HD and the other two are not, so I'm not bothered by the limitation of only the main tv being in HD. But, my problem comes in when I look ahead to the near future, as I would like to upgrade my other two tvs to HD. I know that dish won't allow me to lease more than 4 tuners at once, so I need to find another solution.

What would be my best way to get around this? Obviously I would have to go ahead and buy the additional receivers instead of leasing them, but what are the pros and cons of owning your hardware? Would it make sense to eliminate all leased hardware?

Also I have heard something about the pricing update from Dish regarding DVRs. What exactly are they doing? If I purchased additional DVRs would I then run into these new fees, or are they only for leased DVRs?

There is absolutely no advantage to owning your equipment. Trust me. You will incurr the same fees as everyone else. I believe Dish upped the number of leased receivers/tuners you can have.

Return your 622 and replace with 612 DVR they are dual tuner but count as single tuner DVRs for lease purposes.

Four 211/211K single tuner receivers could replace the 622 using external Hard Drives to give DVR capabilities.

Lastly as of Feb.1st the lease limit is supposed to have gone up to 6 tuners so you could lease 2 additional 211 receivers for the new HD TVs.

Fees are charged regardless of own or lease so no advantage to owning any more. Dual tuner units count as a single unit so in your case you could add single tuner HD units, 211K, for the new HD TV's and then use your dual tuner units for Pip on the original HD's. If you go to the Dish Web site there is a page that shows the new charges for receivers. Remembering that the most expensive to lease will be "free" you can then figure out what configuration will be the best for you both cost wise and technology wise.
Good Luck

The new rules are 6 tuners, 3 receivers leased, so you can have up to 3 duos leased. I know there is no set release date, but you might just want to wait for the 922 which could sling hd to the 4th tv. To reduce cost you could get a 612 to replace the two 622s, so your extra receiver costs would be $20 instead of $34. I would not recommend the 612s, had a lot of trouble with them, i would go with (2) 211ks with EHD even though they are one sat tuner ($14/month), you could put the 922 in the main room, and have the 211ks in the secondary rooms, basically the same set up you have now since each tv only has one sat tuner to record on. Since it sounds like you don't have the HDTVs yet might be worth the wait for the 922 IMO.

And since they will most likely change "upgrade fee" to downgrade to 211ks or 612s, you would be better off just buying the 211ks if you went in that direction, they are only like $20 more than the upgrade fee, or just keep the 622's and pay the extra charges.
