Hi guys- When I signed up with D* 2 yrs ago, they charged me $199.00 for the HD H20 receiver. When I cancel my service Do I own the equipment since I paid $199.00 for it?

If that is so, Why did they charge me $199.00?

DirecTV will lease you a standard def receiver with no upfront charge, just the $5/month lease charge. You want something more advanced, like a SD DVR or HR receiver, you pay a $99 up front upgrade charge, but the same $5/month lease charge. Same for the HD DVR, $199 up front and the $5/month lease charge.

To have the pleasure of recieving their HD.

Also, Im sure full retail is about 100 dollars more than what you paid.
You never own their equipment.

I bought a unit from Circuit city couple of years ago,

Activated on my direc tv acct.
Once you do that, it automatically becomes ''their'' equipment.

So You are saying $199 for the priviledge of letting them charge me more for HD/DVR?

Let me run this question at ya....If I lease a 722 from E* does the lease fee include a replacement if it dies on me?

NO, the $199 is because you wanted a HD DVR vs. a standard def non-DVR receiver. A HD DVR costs DirecTV more to make then a SD receiver so they charge the $199 to offset that cost.

I understand that, but they still are getting HD and DVR charges out of me. Even if it costs a million dollars to make and they get it back in 2 yrs, the $199 is gravy since they charge for the 2 services it provides.

Remember, there is no lease charge for your first receiver. It is simply an additional receiver charge.

ETA: I realize you know this Rad, I was just adding to your post for others that may not be aware of this

You pay the HD charge if it was a HD DVR or HD receiver, that's to cover the cost of providing HD programming, like the five satellites they've launched to do just that. The DVR fee is charged only once on an account, so you have one or 8 DVR, SD or HD it's only that once charge. Why they charge that DVR fee, they've said it was because of the extra guide data that DVR's get, others have said it's to help pay for Tivo license fees, I think it's just pure profit on their part.

One of the reasons WA state AG is suing D*.
