Anyone jailbroken an iPod touch 2g with 3.1.2 or 3.1.3 ? The so-called guides on the topic are all over the place... Dozens of different ways to do it. Some work for some and not for others. I even followed along with a YouTube video of a guy doing a jailbreak and his behaved differently.

And then some guides say redsn0w works for iPods and another says it doesn't work for iPods (yet). blackrain doesn't work on the touch. p0wnage is a Mac application...

Mine is a non-MC model too.

i used blackra1n rc3 on my 3rd gen itouch running 3.1.2. it sucks because it has problems and every reboot requires tethering to the pc and running blackra1n again.

from speculation ( i have heard rumors) that you cannot jailbreak 3.1.3.
at least not yet.

i restored my ipod back to being "in jail" LOL. it is more reliable and does not lock up all the time. my iphone 3G with 3.1.2 ran flawless on blackra1n and cydia apps.

What I've read says the 3g models generally are still not able to be jailbroken. Well, they can, but must be tethered. Also, touch models with s/n starting with "MC" can't. Mine is a 2g and the s/n does not start with "MC". So, I should be able to...

Avoid 3.1.3 software like the plague, it fixed nothing except "security" holes a.k.a. jailbreak methods.

I am confident it will be jailbroken eventually but for now 3.1.2 is working just fine with whatever jailbreak method you choose. Unfortunately, 3GS and newer iPod Touch are stuck at 3.1.3 if you ever have to do a restore and didn't already get Cydia to store your info while the version you are using was still being "signed" by Apple.

Get your info from the source Dev-Team Blog everything else is pretty much repetition, misinformation, rumors and hearsay.

We have (2) iPod touch devices. One is still on 3.1.2, other is on 3.1.3. I've tried both with no luck...

Can I revert back to 3.1.2 by restoring it ? If so, what gets lost ? Songs are okay... I can re-add them. What about apps, etc, etc.

Thanks for that link. When I went there, I found this:
3.1.3 and thee

Update 3: [Don’t go near this if you have 3GS, newer ipt2G, or any ipt3G] For those with older (non-MC) iPod touch 2G, we’ve compiled a special version of redsn0w meant just for you: Mac and Windows. You guys can get in on the “3.1.2 loophole” too using this special version. Don’t try this if you have a newer iPod Touch 2G or if you’re not completely sure what version you have. And of course don’t try it for 3GS or ipt3G either.

Figures.... I kept reading guides that said if your serial number starts with "MC", you can't use these tools yet. Checked mine and nope, doesn't start with "MC". Turns out it's the model # they're referring to, not the serial number ! I will admit, redsn0w does say "model" when it makes you answer yes/no regarding this but I was thinking "serial #, serial #, serial #" and hit "NO".

I guess I'll have to wait for now. :(

If you're on 3.1.3 with the newest hardware, no joy for you yet. Everything else *should* be jailbreakable.

I can confirm that the newest blackra1n will work on 3.1.2 on an iPhone 3GS but only as a "tethered" jailbreak, meaning that if you reboot the device it will go into recovery mode, just plug it in and run blackra1n again and it will boot up.

Finally jail-broke both devices. My wife's, as mentioned, was still on 3.1.2, and using redsn0w, the built-in instructions are wrong. It mentions holding the lock and home key down "until this message" goes away. If you release them within 5 seconds, or even longer, it won't work. I just kept the damn buttons held until I got the hard drive image on the iPod screen !! :D

For my son's iPod, I had to use saurik's \etc\hosts "fix" and then was able to downgrade his from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2. iTunes restored his settings, had to re-add songs and movies, but all apps are gone. No big deal on free ones, but paid ones still indicate that I'm going to pay, so I haven't reinstalled any of those yet. Oh yeah, I jail broke it too...

Isn't there a way in iTunes to have it redownload whatever you've purchased in the past? I've never needed or looked for such a feature but it seems like an important one.

Even though it indicates in the download process like you are going to pay again, I don't think you will actually be charged. Doesn't iTunes know what apps each serial # (device) has downloaded in the past?

There is an "Applications" tab in iTunes, but it only shows the built-in apps, not any that were downloaded from the App Store.

You're right. It told me it was going to cost $0.99 or $1.99 or whatever but then gave a pop-up telling me I'd already downloaded this app and it's free to download again.

One of them went from $0.99 to $1.99 since we bought it and I was expecting it to make me pay the difference, but it didn't.

With your ipod/iPhone plugged in and iTunes running, right click on your device in the left pane of iTunes, and click on "Transfer Purchases". It should transfer the apps you bought through your iPod into the iTunes app folder.

Good deal. Glad I could help.;)
