Hi

I would like to know, if I plug in an external hard drive to my dish 622 DVR and record to it, can I then plug the drive into my computer and read the files.

What format are they saved in?

Is there software that will read or convert them so that they are in normal DVD format or something that I can edit in Adobe Premiere?

In the past I have had to record to DVD from my dish box and then copy them into my computer. If would be nice if I could skip the DVD step.

You move contents of your DVR to the EHD. You don't record to it.
Files are Linux and encrypted and cannot be viewed or edited on PC. ..at least not easily.

*Unless you have a ViP 211, 211k, where the recordings are scribed directly to the EHD.

Also, for additional storage or backup don't use a PC hard drive.. most of the time the target drive requires a re-format and sometimes does not prompt before-hand. You don't want to end up with an erased hard-drive on your PC or laptop.

Could you be more specific if something was unclear? I was simply adding additional information about backing up/recording to an External Hard Drive. And with a Solo ViP 211/211k receiver it is converted to a DVR by recording directly to an EHD.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the info.
To bad I was hoping that an external HD would be a good way to move stuff from on platform to another.

I'll just have to stick with copying stuff to DVD first.

Yeah...it's a pain. The content providers will not (and probably never will) allow this.

Pretty much the only option is S-Video out to a DVD Recorder.

Component out to a Hauppauge 1212 PVR that outputs the ts files to your PC via USB 2.0 connection.
