I am probably going with comcast but will also buy or burn DVDs of my favorite higher tier channel shows like many on national geo.
Then we can get a new provider, and save tons more.

I just need some time, right now I am VERY BUSY. which is best but leaves me little time and energy to rewire, clean up shop and garage, take down some shelves so comacst installer has room to work.

I am just waiting for the ceton tuner to come out and I am leaving. I've got Media center working fine with OTA. I just need the ceton card and I will switch to FIOS.
10 years ago, DISH was great. They made the cable company look like an uncaring greedy "pig". They have certainly changed over the last 10 years.
I know "business is business", but I feel I need a change now.

whats a ceton tuner? never heard of that.
just look what occured, beancounters ruled at cable, and e sprang to life with charlies you asked for it you got it, charlie chats were wonderful people would call in with problems and they would get the CEOs attention.
now beancounters rule at E, the charlie chat never has a complaint call, chucks handlers keep him in the dark, the chat now just a marketing tool..
one day soon e will wonder what went wrong.

Ceton Tuner will have 4 tuners and a cable card slot. You put it in your windows media center PC and stream content to your xbox or and "extender".
I have a OTA dual tuner in it now. Works fine. I just added a 1 TB drive for recorded shows. I have been slowly adding to my setup to avoid a big one time charge. I wasn't sure that it was the direction I wanted to go or not.
I'm getting out of "feasibility" and now I just need a cable card tuner and I'm ready to go.

That card is going to be close to $500. That's a L of a lot of money for a tuner card.

It still works out as a pretty expensive solution. You still need a full featured PC and another tuner if you want analog cable channels. Of course since you already have a dedicated PC you will not have the big up front expense.
You also have to keep up with any of the cable company changes to digital channels.
I look at it this way... I pay $XX a month to "rent" my DVRs. Over Y months, I will get my money back. I've been renting from Dish for almost 10 years. That would have gotten me a few PCs and cards already.
And as every upgrade and change came along, you would have to upgrade tuner cards. If your the OTA type, you had to upgraded to a DTV tuner. If your the cable type, you had to upgrade to QAM and then to CableCard and soon to whatever (if anything) replaces CableCard and/or makes SDV available to an HTPC.

You asked I found an answer. There is a subtle difference. With E* we do have contracts for a certain length of time so by that fact we have a lease.
DISH Network, DIRECTV, wireless and cable companies seem to favor the term "commitment".
The distinction is important as some taxing jurisdictions rate rentals and leases differently.
The way I look at is this.
Lease implies that you own the product so D*/E* are not responsible for repairs, even though we never actually have the option to buy the residual out at the end of the contract ( 2 year commitment). Like with a car.
Rent implies the E* or D* would still be legal owner of the product and be responsible for repairs.
Personally, I see TV service no different that cell phone service. You purchase a phone at a discounted rate in turn signing a commitment period for the reduced rate of hardware.
The difference is TV service providers that Lease and expect the product returned are just greedy, these high end smart phones are just as expensive as any HD DVR to produce but yet we get to keep those after contract is up and even if we terminate early.
Also the Cell phone companies (I believe, I may be wrong on this) are not allowed to change your price without offering you the out of your contract.

In the beginning dish was cheaper with the dual tuner receivers, which was a great selling point and a big reason why i chose them instead of dtv. Now i have to pay 17 dollars instead of the 7 I was paying. I guess they are starting now to try and get some of the money they will need to pay tivo.
Well, being I am on paperless billing and autopay to get the .01 Cinemax deal, I didn't even know about the price increases, until I just went to Dish site, for customer support, and saw my bill. Out of sight, out of mind.
My bill went up over $20! You have got to be kidding me. My contract expires in July, and I am a goner.
