Why rename TurboHD packages to Dish America?

I'm trying to fathom why DISH bothered to make this name change since they seem intent on not adding any new HD channels to these HD-only packages (that they used to widely advertise). I can only come up with one reason: they only did it to make it harder to "find" these HD-only packages. Sadly this kind of trickery seems par for the course with DISH (since the don't seem to have a problem lying to future and current customers). Maybe DISH was getting too many calls from people wanting switch to these cheaper TurboHD packages so the decided a name change (implemented at the same time as the recent price hike) might make things harder for that to happen. That way when people called asking for these cheaper HD-only packages, CSRs could honestly claim "TurboHD Silver" is no longer available. I cannot find "Dish America" mentioned anywhere on their website, and even using their website's search fucntion for that phrase returns nothing.

Anyone else have any other theories why DISH went to all the trouble for packages they hide so well?

Turbo was a good idea

The frustration is that they just hide things, but never reveal things. I've never had a company, other than a "boss," play this game of not communicating about a product that they sell. If it's a contract issue, just tell us. If they decided to go another route and will no longer add HD to the package, tell us.

Instead they switch names, don't respond to questions directly, and have "no comment."

My thoughts are that they got themselves into some contract issues and aren't able to add more channels, yet, are forced by those contracts to keep the packages around for a while. Wish I had Absolute.

can someone post the current breakdown for the "turbohd" or whatever they are called now?

I may have to come crawling back and what to know what they cost....

I believe the pricing is as follows...

Dish America (TurboHD Bronze): $29.99
Dish America Silver (TurboHD Silver): $39.99
Dish America Gold (TurboHD Gold): $49.99

These packages do not include local channels. So tack on $5 for locals.

Well perhaps they did not want to associate TurboHD with incomplete packages. Since it appears they will always be missing some channels out of a pure HD channel package, they probably did not want to taint the trademark "TurboHD".

The 922 has "TurboHD" backlit on it. They probably did not want the name of an incomplete package associated with it.

I loved the Turbo package until

Until they stopped adding HD channels to this package I thought it was great. Why pay for all those SD channels you never watch. Don't you think there will be a day when they will need to offer an HD only and an SD only package in the future. There will always be those people that don't want HD then they would have an only SD package for them . I want Dish to bring this Turbo package back and keep it up to date with the new HD.

Why are the channel listings complete? DISH America Silver...85 channels!

Actually this channel listing is just EXTREMELY misleading. It shows the Dish America prices at the top, then below them -- in the same columns -- it says, "America's Top ### + HD". It is almost like they are trying to mislead people. I'm sure Charlie loves it!

That said, the first link you have does have some completely false info. Just to name, I don't believe MTV HD, FX HD, SPEED HD, and FOX Business Network HD are available in ANY (HD-only) Dish America package.

That's exactly my point. That got changed the same time the package names changed.

Why???
So far no one has offered any other rational explanation. So the one I gave in the first post in this thread still seems the most plausible. And sadly, it does seem to follow with DISH's other questionable business practices.

Hey guys,

I'm new here, but not new to the industry. We're a DISH Sales Partner. Maybe I can help?

What's all the fuss about? We've offered an all-HD Package for years now. Now it is called DISH America, used to be called TurboHD. It is less expensive than the SD+HD packages.

May I ask, politely, where the confusion is coming from? And hopefully I can be part of the solution. Thanks guys!

The fuss is about these "all-HD" packages not having all the HD! There was a rumor for months that these packages were going away because Dish just couldn't get the content providers to unbundle their HD channels from their SD-only channels. Then there was the big price increase last year which was going to be "worth it" with new channel additions that never came. So, while the price today may still have some appeal, it doesn't have the appeal it once did and it may not include your favorite HD channels at all.
