An Epiphany Happened Tonight RE:DVR Fees

You pay the $40 EHD enabling fee for the ViP211 ONCE for the entire account, then add as many 211's as you like with the only fee being the $7 receiver fee.

I have 3 211's with a 722k as my primary, so I pay $6 for the primary (722k) ($6 DVR fee) then $7 for each of the 211's - total fees $27/month for 4 receivers all with recording capability.

The receiver fee is really just an output fee ($7 per output) solo receiver is $7, duo receiver is $7+$7=$14. The hidden DVR fee is the $3 extra added to the output fee on DVR receivers, so the solo DVR is $7+$3=$10 and the Duo DVR is $7+$7+$3=$17.

Fancier cars, TVs, etc, cost more than basic models. Why should Dish or anyone not charge more for a box with more features? If all boxes cost the same, why would anyone want the low end stuff?

BTW, I've learned Fios, at least in my area, actually charges more than Dish for HD DVRs, with no first one free. And the Fios boxes are certainly not up to the level of the ViPx22 HD DVRs.

Here in SW FL, the two-tuner DVR is $16, the multiroom is $20, and a STB is $10. I assume those prices are the same everywhere, but I don't know for sure. Right now the multi is free for 12 months and the DVR is free for only 3 months. Fios TV will work for some people because of bundling with other services they need; otherwise, it's expensive after the promos and for anyone needing to service lots of rooms.

But i only paid the price of my TV and car. DVR is a function of the box. I bought mine outright, why should I have to pay a monthly fee? It is a DVR- that is what it does.

Fact is though, a lot of companies are finding out they can get away with crap like this. Sprint did this with the release of the EVO. Customers had to pay an additional $10/mo for this phone. People paid and starting 2/1, everyone is going to be paying that extra $10/mo per line.

Those are what they call "Just Because" fees. It's "just because" they have you by the balls, and want to squeeze every last penny out of you. Is it any wonder that Dish made the "15 most hated companies in America" list this year? Those fees were top of the list in complaints that got them there.

You honestly think it costs Dish the same to build a 722k as a 211? Or do you realize that a duo receiver does the job of 2 solos (when it comes to SD at least)

I can see that complaint when it comes to owned receivers, but not for leased receivers.

If I bought another 211k to put on my account, would Chuck charge me a receiver fee for the second 211k?

i do realize the duo puts out 1 sd and 1 hd, never used that feature on mine though
you can also split the single reciver if you want to, or use diff outputs.
$17 for a reciver is still too much, no mater what it does

My dad has 4 receivers (2 311's a 322 and a 625) all paid for (owned) and he has to pay a fee on each one after the 1st just like folks who lease

In that case, the $7 fee doesn't seem all that bad. It's still a little hokey, but not bad. Especially if you need independant & simultaneous viewing of sat channels on more than one set in HD.

I think one big mistake that many make is to think they need 1 tuner for each TV in the house. But in reality, with proper distribution, you really only need 1 tuner for each person in the house. It never ceases to amaze me how many 2 people households are paying for 4 room setups.

There are MANY cases when two people in one house 'need' more than two tuners. At any given night during the week there are several shows on at once and multiple tuners are required to capture them all.

heh heh. I live alone and have 2 dual tuner D* DVR's and a HD receiver
