Hi guys and gals. I have a camping trip coming up with a large group and I would like to take my dish tv with me so we can watch college football while camping. What I had in mind was to buy a second dish and take the box from my house with me. Is that kosher? I need to know what kind of dish I need to buy. I'd like to get away as cheap as possible. I actually only need to recieve FX HD and ABC HD (KTUL is the local ABC affiliate for the area I'll be camping at) to get the games I want. I have an HD Duo DVR/VIP722K box (reciever?).

So here's my questions:
1. Can I use my box with a new dish for camping?
2. What kind of dish and LNB combo do I need to get those two channels in HD? (cheapo?)
3. What satellite/s to I need point to?
4. Is there anything else I need to buy other than a dish? (switches, special coax, etc.)

I'm in Oklahoma by the way. 73052 zip.

What satellites are you looking at now? Menu-6-1-3 will tell you. If your looking at 110/119/129 and you don't NEED HD, your easiest bet would be a dish 500 and a dish pro plus lnb (DPP) that would get your SD programming. You would need a cable from one of the 2 ports that are on the same side of the lnb directly to the separator on your 722k. No switches needed, its internal in the lnb.

To get HD, you would need a 1000.2 or a 1000.4 depending on what sats your looking at now. I apologize as I'm doing this from my phone and can't seem to find the list to see where your locals are coming from.

You want a Dish 1000.2 for the western arc. 110, 119, 129 to get what you have at home. If all you want is FX and KTUL then you could use a single Dish 300 for just the 129 sat as our locals are in HD on 129 and so is FX. Depending on where you are camping you could also use an antenna for the locals.

edit:
Seeing from zipcode your actually in the OKC dma, then you would still get KOCO off the satellite with 129 as the HD spotbeam covers most of the state. To get KTUL you would need an antenna or you would have to change your service address to somewhere in the Tulsa DMA

Thank you, couldn't find where his locals were, I didn't think about spotbeaming 129 as long as there is a Los, that would work well if you don't need any SD.

Funny, One of the games I want to watch is OSU/TU game, and of course OU/FSU. Actually the zip where I'll be be camping is 74432 in Eufaula, OK. My mistake. So, do you think I could pick up KOCO from there on 129? If so, then I can get a cheap dish huh. I know my dad uses 110 in Eufaula, but it's not HD. I'm afraid an antenna won't get good reception out there with all the hills and trees, without a really tall pole.

Thanks for the quick replies guys :)

yep, you won't pick up the Tulsa locals at Lake Eufaula without a nice outdoor antenna. As long as you can hit 129 with a single 18in dish, then you would be able to get FX HD and either KTUL or KOCO in HD depending on whether you are subscribed to OKC or Tulsa locals.

I would go for the 1000.2 dish if camping is a regular thing, also the OU/FSU game is not yet confirmed for ABC, it may be on ESPN instead. I know KOCO posted that it would be an ABC game, but ABC backtracked and at this time it is still pending which channel it is going to be broadcast on. With the 1000.2 you would be able to get FSN and ESPN too should the need arise. I have a 1k2 dish at our Lake house at Ft. Giibson lake, as we go out year round. I will probably watch the 1st quarter of the OU game before heading over to Chapman Field for the OSU/TU game. I get the nice luxury suite view that week, thanks to my sisters company. Not real happy about the 9pm kickoff for tv though.

Thanks alot. I hope the OU game stays with ABC. We pretty much only camp once during the football season, so I don't need TV on any other trip. Luxury suites at Chapman are very nice. I got to use the Athletic director's suite the last two years, but my hook-up isn't there anymore, so back to regular seats for me. My brother played for TU '97-'00.

OSU1991, do you know where I could get a cheap dish here in OK? I'll even go for the dish 1000 or TurboHD if I find one cheap enough. I'll be in Tulsa area this weekend and will drive through OKC to get there, so anywhere in between is on the way for me. I've been looking on e-bay and craigslist and the dish 1000s seem to go for $75 to $100. The cheaper the better. What about off-brand dishes? Thanks.

Try looking on your neighborhood roofs, there are a lot of unused dishes.

Look for houses that have both Dish and Directv dishes on the roof. Odds are one of them is not being used. I had several until last year when i moved. I got rid of all the extra Dish and Directv dishes i had. Look for a local installer, sometimes they have old ones they have pulled off homes. I know a retailer here a few years ago had a dumpster outside his store where they dumped all the old dishes when they upgraded someone.

Correction: The Tulsa v. Oklahoma State game is going to be on FSN, which I assume will be Fox Sports Southwest. Which satellite is FSN on?

Update: I got a Dish 1000 with a tripod for $60 on craigslist. So I should be covered on any station.

I would assume it get's more difficult as you add satellites, so I'll just tune in the one or ones I need.

You will want to aim the dish for 119. If you hit 119 correctly then 110 and 129 will be there too. FSN SD is on channel 416 on the 119 sat. The HD feed will be on one of the HD ALT channels probably 444 or 445 on the 129 sat

EDIT Make sure you look up the skew, azimuth and elevation before you leave and get stuck without internet to look them up. Print them out and take with you for the zipcode you will be in
