DISH Network Retailer Chat Recap - "Hopper Special" - 2/16/2012

Looks like I'll have an extra EHD after I upgrade to the Hopper and my 211k can no longer be used. Luckily I own it and can always use it again if Dish changes their mind on Vip receivers on Hopper accounts.

Well I called dish today to cancell since Direct tv whole home solution seems to be a better deal. They transferred me to the retintion department and was told by the rep that come March 15th dish will offer a special package for current customers. I hope this is true or i will switch to direct tv.(this is after being wit dish for 20 years).

What are going to do about your tailgater?

Well I don't have to really do anything since I technically didn't pay for the 211k or Tailgater since I sell them I just took them home. I do pay the $7/mo. for the 211K on my account though. I'll hang on to both and either sell them or wait for Dish to fix their problem.

A few things...

The folks from DISH were watching your comments and feedback carefully during the chat and they ARE paying attention!

First they are telling me they are seeing what can be done about people with Tailgaters so they don't need a seperate account. (Keep your fingers crossed there guys!)

Scott my fingers are crossed but I also hope this change if it does happen does not apply only if you have a 211k and a Tailgater. The wife and I purchased a 722K for the motorhome so that we could take content with us via EHD not to mention how nice it is when were not in the motorhome but want to have say a Superbowl or Daytona 500 party to setup the tripod hookup the 722 in the garage and we're ready to roll. One quick call to reactivate and one the next day to deactivate and it's a painless party. Well other than the cleanup afterwards. :D So if you get access to someone's ear at Dish you might mention that RVers don't just use the 211k/Tailgater.

Thanks.

Scott is dish aware that Direct Tv is willing to offer a better deal to current dish customers IE no charge to get the whole home DVR solution and just $25.00 per month fees for up to five boxes.

Direct TV seems to want to pull out all the stops on grabbing current dish customers, I was told that their solution is 100% better than what dish will offer. Is tnis true?

I have decided to wait two months and see what folks have to say about hopper and joey and then decide.

Personally I think the best (and smartest) thing to do is to allow for one (and only one) ViP receiver allowed on a Hopper account.

If they did that it would be fair to everyone and would still cut down on account stacking.

They will tell you anything to keep you as a customer. Did you expect anything less?

I dont know about DIRECTV or what they are doing. I have also never used their HR34 Mutliroom DVR but have been told that you can only watch one recording in a remote room at a time meaning that bedroom 1 can watch a DVRed show, while Bedroom 2 can't. If this is true (and again I have never used one) that is a big limitation to have.

From where I sit there is no correct solution here. You have to select by who gives you what you want and does it for the best price. I am not pro DISH or PRO DIRECTV in this way as everyones needs are different.

I currently have a 722K w/ OTA module feeding my primary HDTV and 3 SD TV's off of the TV2 output. So, right now, my fee is only $6/month for the DVR. If I switch to the Hopper w/ 3 Joeys, my fees will jump to $31, and for the time being will have 1 less tuner (until they add OTA). While I understand that this is a state of the art system with a lot more functionality (even if some of it is just being promised for now), it is hard to justify spending $25 more per month when my only real goal is to get HD to all of my sets. The other features are nice (DLNA, apps, etc), but all I really want is HD throughout the house.

Is is true that you can't have 2 remotes for 1 Joey? One of the TV's I have is rarely used, so HD is not a necessity, but I do need to be able to get an SD signal to it. If I could hook up an RF modulator to 1 of the Joeys and control that Joey with 2 separate remotes, that would knock my fees down to $24. If that is not an option, and I do decide to upgrade, there is really no reason not to get 2 Hoppers and 2 Joeys - the fees would be the same as 1 Hopper/3 Joeys, and it would double my tuners and recording capacity. There would be a larger upfront cost, but that would just be a onetime fee. I really wish they would just sell the Joeys and have no monthly fee, but I guess that is never going to happen.

I look forward to learning if you can plug a powered USB hub into the Hopper with 4 EHDs in the hub, all on at the same time, and all recognized by the Hopper. I believe you can do this with a ViP922.

A couple of questions:
How are these installed? I think I read they work over Cat 5/6, so do I need to install the cable or will they do it, and if so, how much for the install? Will the Hopper read all the recorded items I have on my external HD I currently have attached to my 722?
Currently the system only works over coax. Any needed coax will be run by the installer. Yes on the EHD.

There are features and speed issues that might compensate for that. Your attitude doesn't surprise me tho. Hope you sell of ton of these.:)

I don't see how he could, with such a negative attitude.

Claude, you really seem to be intent on finding everything negative about the Hopper and nothing positive. Can you not see that for many if not most people, this is a good system? Does DirecTV pay you better?
