So being new to the satellite game. Actually still don't have it yet (Hopper...) I saw the Uplink Report threads. I went to Google to see what this stuff actually means. All I could gather is that it is data sent from your sat box back up to the server. Could someone explain what this data is, and why I should care about it? Perhaps a short explanation could be at the top of that section for us new guys and gals.

Well, now, that's a confusing question! Are you asking about the new Dish Network whole-home DVR receiver, or the Uplink Reports? If the latter, the "uplink" in question is really the channel map that Dish receivers use to determine which satellite, transponder, polarization, and multiplex stream it's on, in order to tune to that channel. Dish puts up this information in advance while setting up new channels, so it's interesting to see (and speculate) what's coming next.

The comment about the Hopper threw me.. I didn't see it as wanting information on the uplink report, that's a horse of a different color......

I didn't need a search engine to figure out what the uplink reports were. From reading a few of them, I could determine that the reports are comparisons between a list of channels, transponders and satellites that Dish currently has configured. Each time there are changes to the satellite configurations, a new report is generated detailing those changes. From deduction, I determined that there are multiple satellites at different geostationary orbits (measured in degrees West of the meridian), there are multiple transponders transmitting signals from each satellite, and there is a difference between a spotbeam (pointed at a particular city/area) and CONUS beam (covering the entire continental US).

Looking into further detail of each report, I also determined that Package Flags indicate which programming package a particular channel is offered in, Available or N/A tells whether a subscribed customer can see that channel, and Free Preview is when a channel is viewable to all subscribers regardless of which programming package they subscribe to.

hahaha, the title of this thread made my day!!. so many people think they are so smart these days because they can google anything (not attacking anyone, just pointing it out). As an IT consultant, I get tired of the people who say "anyone can do your job- just use google." To which I always pose the challenge of performing any type of repair without access to the internet and without doing a simple FORMAT of a computer. No takers yet, lol.... end rant...
