Gotta love Dish!!

Actually no, I don't think it is a fair assessment. For a current customer out of promos with a hopper and a joey 2 additional years would be 76.99 *24 = 1847.76. 2 years of promo pricing with Directv with a HR34 and HD receiver would be $1571.76. The cost of a current customer upgrading to a hopper and a joey would be $99.00 so that would be the same price as Directv's upfront costs. That is a wash.

A current customer with no promos would save $276 over the next 2 years by switching to Directv.
So if someone got a $10 credit with Dish, it would ultimately be a wash, save about a buck and change per month.

No I think Choice Xtra is considered the closest thing to AT200.

Edit: We could discuss the differences in the packages and debate which is better but that's a whole new conversation.

As best I can tell that post was still revealing, but not by as much. You are saving by going to a promo but of course depending on the configuration not by very much it seems. About $100 or so year for the inconvenience to the family etc... And after the promo Dish appears less expensive.

You would also have 6 tuners with this setup on Directv while you would only have 3 on Dish. Directv additional receiver fees are $6 while Dish is $7 so the more receivers you add the better value Directv becomes(barely).

I like both providers. I am on my 3rd run with Dish and I have had Directv twice in the past. I have about 8 months left on my Dish contract and I'll probably be on Directv again in a year or 2. I'll agree that Dish is slightly cheaper with no promos but in my experience they have been pretty close. To me the switch is worth it every few years for a better price and upgraded equipment.

I hate going on and on so hopefully this is my last? lol..., But if you do add a second room with Direct it's $6, is that with another DVR/Tuner? With Dish it's $7 but that second room can be another Hopper giving you six (maybe 7 or 8 when OTA) tuners, eventually integrated. Sounds close for two rooms with those configurations. (And I don't know if $6 gets you a DVR/Tuner with Direct)

Yep $6 goes for DVRs too. You would have to add an additional $99 upfront to get an additional HDDVR while a 2nd hopper would be an additional $199. Adding an extra HDDVR on Directv would get you 7 recordable tuners vs 6 on Dish with 2 hoppers for $100 less upfront and $1 less in equipment costs per month.

I believe Directv was only charging $6 for an additional HDDVR even before whole home while dish would charge $17 for a second 722. That why I say the price in my experience has been pretty close between the two providers. Dish has lower programming costs but Directv was cheaper in equipment costs for multiple DVRs.

What inconvenience? I use a Logitech Harmony remote, so there is no relearning after I get the Harmony re-programmed. My wife is looking forward to a Directv DVR again as she hated her VIP 612 which gave her much frustration due to its quirks. Installation is free and done by someone else. I am going to end up with 7 tuners which is REALLY going to make the wife happy and the HR34 has much more hardrive than the VIP's we have now. Plus I am going to save a couple of hundred dollars and have internet on both DVR's instead of the one I have now. Win, win I think.

The only real inconvenience is boxing up the Dish stuff and dropping it off at UPS, as I remember tho, UPS will pick it up.

FWIW I did recheck my figures and I did not add the $2 a month that someone pointed out about 2 premiums discount. Instead of saving $268, I will only save $220.

And in 2 years after the promo expires, I will do it all over again, probably switch back to DIsh. :):)

Yes, you get more tuners but in my useage, the Hopper with PTAT is actually more useful than an HR34 would be on some nights.

And I'm like you, I like both providers for different reasons, although Dish has the better HD lineup for me. Note I didn't say more HD just better lineup of what is there.

I understand for you it's not an inconvenience, and you did say the bottom line is cost so really you are following what you have apparently done for quite awhile. But as others have posted it would be an inconvenience, in time and energy, and if you have technically challenged people in the house, it could become a nightmare. In my case programming means more, so it would be the inconvenience of losing HD channels and superstations I watch plus the AAD distants. Obvoiusly the same can be said switching the other way, losing some sports or some sports in HD. But that's my point that is an inconvenience, I'd say for most considering a savings of only about $100 or so a year for two years the have to do it all over again.

I agree that it is an inconvenience to switch. Everyone has to learn new channel numbers, how the new equipment works, and the day off work to wait for an installer.

I'm glad this came up because it's good to see exactly what you save by switching so you can weigh it against the convenience factor.

Agreed, it is a good thread.

<<<<Customer since 1993 all problems were handled by Dish. It just takes talking to the tech people sometimes. Most people sit and stew about their problems. I have had a few, I even tried Comcast as an alternate. Nothing beats Dish! I always took my probs to a higher authority if I wasnt satified. Dish has been easy to work with.

Why not?.DISH has more basic HD channels and DirecTV has more Premium and Sports channels in HD,that's not hard to say?;)
