North Platte Nebraska
Hello,
I need contact info for someone at corporate dish. Our account rep is not helping our situation at all. I recently (November) started a petition in hopes that the FCC, The Nielson Company, and Dish would allow Nebraska locals to more of Nebraska residents. I got a letter today informing me that our local NBC affiliate is considered "significantly viewed" in 11 of the 12 counties listed in our petition. So far there are only 3 counties that get the North Platte locals, this means that 11 more counties can get our NBC. But, I am being told that Dish may not be compelled to offer this channel. I say that public safety should be compelling enough. Also, DirecTV does not offer North Platte locals at all, or locals in this DMA at all. This would be an awesome marketing solution for Dish. Imagine, a local channel that DirecTV does not offer at all. I NEED HELP! Can any one point me in the right direction?

heh good luck

Dish right now cannot offer any significantly viewed station due to the FCC lawsuit from 06. That was lifted a couple years ago but they can only allow a station to be imported if there is a missing network for that market. Like as example the DMA down the road from me (Mankato, MN) only is CBS & Fox. Dish can import ABC & NBC from Minneapolis

Also you don't need us for an address, readily available online, a two second search on Google gives a couple of them, I have done it before. Englewood I think.

You have to understand Dish has limited satellite space. There are many priorities Dish needs to fulfill before giving someone a significantly viewed channel. Asking doesn't cost anything, so go for it!

Ok, the counties in Nebraska that are effected get their locals from Denver, 250+ miles from them. We (North Platte DMA) are on average only 70 miles from these counties. The FCC is who I got the letter from so they must be saying it's ok for Dish to do this. Limited satellite space? These locals are already available, they don't take any more space. They just need to broaden the area/zip codes that recieve them. I have been installing fictional addresses to these counties for alost a year now, so the spot beam will reach. I know I can get the mailing address online, and the info@dish.com, been there, done that. I was hoping someone had a "friend" on the deep inside. My retailer channels don't seem to work, or i'm being ignored.

Good luck!

Unless there is some sports team that is popular where Dish could use it to gain subs, the chance of it happening is zero mostly due to the fact that Dish would have to pay the local channel for retransmission.

Public safety means nothing, its all about money

Again...Dish can only import a station if there is no affiliate in that market. This is from the ruling back in 2010 which allowed Dish to do that. From 12/1/06 until mid 2010 they couldnt give you ANY channel that wasnt in your market. Thats why short markets like North Platte didnt get locals until recently

Not completely true. Dish provides Burlington locals to Vermonters in the Albany and Boston DMA in addition to the Albany/Boston locals, because of efforts of Mr. Leahy. Theoretically, it could be applied anywhere if reps were engaged in sat issues. It is not what you know, it is who you know. Great political move, because his campaign ads reach Vermonters state-wide. My sense is that VT has a very heavy sat penetration, and sat issues have political consequences in that state.

very true. But on the other side of the coin WMUR in NH is classified as "state wide" yet Dish is not allowed to import it to the other markets in NH other than Boston (which is its home market)
The Vermont thing happened after the ban was lifted so yeah if the representatives in Nebraska want to try it go ahead. What I'm saying is Dish just can't import a station unless that market is missing the affiliate.

Agree 100%. My point is that we need a political solution. Mr Leahy has a lot to say about satellite regulation because of the committee he chairs. One could debate the actual costs, but Leahy was smart enough to add a gift in the sat law to his constituents without costing tax payers much if any money. I am just annoyed that when I contacted my rep to fight for in-state locals for my orphaned county, he completely misunderstood my point and wrote back to say Dish was being punished and so it was never going to happen. My rep, the Neb. reps simply were not interested enough, engaged enough or informed enough to make it happen in our states

If DISH was allowed to play by the same rules as the local cable company then I should be able to get Dallas locals as well as Tyler locals since the cable company provides both in my area.

Regardless of rules, 250 miles away is insane for "local" TV....hell if you travel 250 miles down here, you'll pass through 4 markets!!!
They can't get ANY closer affilliates?

Absolutely, but one wonders if the economics of retrans agreements will affect how many significantly viewed stations cable companies carry. If the costs of local programming rises as local broadcasters demand increasing fees, one wonders how long cable can afford to provide significantly viewed stations on top of locals. Where is the price point at which consumers simply say no mas to price increases.

IIRC the Vermont situation was ameliorated by their legislator successfully inserting a specific exception into the law.

Rattle the cage of tour Senators and Representatives and get your locals from nearby inseted into a law rather than at the whim of Neilson.

BTY, you are probably in the Denver DMA because when cable TV was growing it was sexier to import Denver stations than to import other Nebraska stations and thusly Denver became the local DMA because of historical viewership.

also remember Denver was and still is up on big dish C-Band
So instead of trying to pipe in a OTA station via low powered translators they just grabbed them via C-Band

Also here in MN you can go 250 miles from Minneapolis and still be in the Minneapolis market...but at least there is a couple full powered stations up in that part of the DMA ;)
