I understand what you are saying but your use of hyperbole is not serving your argument well. Technology changes, and those of us that like to use older home theater systems to watch hd content from dish on a roku are likely as close to the edge as an edge case can get. Technology moves on, I purchased my first audio receiver in 1984. Two months later it was already outdated. Such is the life cycle of home audio. If it bothers you so much, it may be a good time to upgrade your equipment. Going forward, most stuff is going to be hdmi audio only... until they change to a new platform.
My home theater audio system is McIntosh which I love dearly. The cost to upgrade to their newer A/V Control Center with hdmi is unfortunately not an option for me at this time due to my being unemployed/retired. Once you go Mac you do not go back. :) :D

None of this would be an issue if Dish would not have dropped AMC.

But they only output 5.1 from the TV's own tuner, not from components...which are just stereo.

If it has optical out it can. My new LG does do 5.1 out from optical, verified on my audio receiver. But not from components is correct.

I thought that's what I said. BTW, recently got an LG myself...60" plasma.

Well now I'm more confused than I was before..:loco:

Connected the roku via hdmi to input 2 of the tv.Ran toslink out from the tv to the receiver.Guees what?Apparently the tv does pass thru 5.1 sound,at least with the roku.Try the 612 and no 5.1.I checked the settings on both tv and the 612 but for whatever reason it will not pass 5.1 from the tv back to the pioneer receiver.

Isn't McIntosh a little overkill for home theater??

Why not pick up a nice, quality, but inexpensive AVR for that, and leave the McIntosh for pure audio listening?

My McIntosh system serves a dual purpose in my living room...two-channel stereo audio and 5.1 surround sound for movies and shows like Breaking Bad. Best of both worlds.

Like I said before, none of this would be an issue if Dish had not dropped AMC. Instead of a Roku streamer, maybe Charlie will buy me a new McIntosh system with HDMI inputs. ;)

Anyone have any advice on that particular model?Or another brand that's in the same price range?
I've been looking at the Pioneer VSX-1021-K, the Denon AVR-1912, and the Onkyo TX-NR609.

All of these can be bought for $250-$300. I'm watching several of them on eBay.

My 612 is passing it through so keep trying. (Though I have it go directly to my audio receiver via HDMI, I also have it go directly to the TV so my wife does not have to use the Audio receiver) I tried it through the Toslink to my receiver and it's 5.1.
Make sure the setting on the 612 is not just PCM. I don't think line or RF makes a difference.
Then make sure the show you are watching is in 5.1 - if it's not on my audio receiver it does not show as 5.1 unless it is with the 612. It is possible with the Roku that signal makes the audio receiver think it is always 5.1 when it is not. (Much like putting the 612 on 1080I - the TV will always show 1080I even though that channel is not)
It may be a hassle but just like the 1080I setting not actually being that until you toggle sometimes so too is this setting. So put on just PCM, and restart the 612, Then go back, put on Dolby Digital/PCM and restart the 612. See if that works.

One other thing, at least with my audio receiver it can get confused after changing inputs on it, and going back to the 612 even with the HDMI and I have to turn the audio receiver off, then back on to see the 5.1.

I upgraded from an old Sony to an Onkyo TX-NR609 about 8 months ago. I upgraded my speakers and sub as well. The reason I did it was for the lossless HD sound formats on bluray that can only be used with HDMI. I also wanted 7.1 sound for my blurays and my old receiver didn't support it. HDMI switching for my PS3, Xbox 360, Roku, and Hopper on one tv input is also a nice feature I gained.

There are plenty of options in the Onkyo 609 price range and I'm sure most of them are good as well but I really love my Onkyo. It has Pandora and tons of other Internet radio services built in. It also supports DLNA music streaming and has a nice iPhone and android app. The app lets you use your phone or iPad as a remote. This is great for us for selecting pandora stations or DLNA songs while we use the zone 2 speakers out on the patio.

I'm sure the other brands in the range are similar but I can recommend the Onkyo 609 highly. It comes with audacity room calibration, THX certified with theater reference volume, plenty of power, and high quality.

I waited two weeks for mine. Called back today and they said it was never shipped out. I asked about the $35 credit, never received that either. Operator talked to a sup and then came back and said my package did not qualify (Latino Dos Max), but because I am a good customer they will send one out.

I explained to the CSR that Latino Dos MAx does indeed have AMC in the package, but it sounded like he was just telling me what his sup told him to.

In other words, Dish screwed up again, and made up some BS excuse. They said they will make it right (if it shows up).

I did not have a hissy fit and demand it be sent next day, but I guess I could have, eh???

Really? Let it go...:dead

Ghpr13:facepalm

Woohoo. Just called yesterday to get my Roku and credits. I gotta start getting back to my forum browsing before I miss more good freebies. I really don't care about the Roku international stuff being cut off, as long as they don't deny me a cheap upgrade when "the hopper 2" comes out (or whatever the next technology will be)

I do not get AMC in my package, so no Roko for me. I do have a Yamaha mid priced Avr which has HDMI. If you are going to buy a new AVR, be sure the HDMI upgrades your resolution to 1080P and does not just pass thru the video. Many avrs just pass thru the video on the HDMI cables.

I don't think anyone can tell the difference between 1080I or 1080I up scaled to 1080P. A possible exception could be playing games as intesive graphics might look smoother. And if the scaler isn't excellent, it could degrade the picture.

Right now I'm debating on 4 different models. All are entry level.Basically it's gonna come down to which I can get for the best price.

1.Pioneer VSX 522-K
2.Yamaha RX V371
3.Denon AVR 1312
4.Onkyo TX SR313

The Denon seems to be to be the cheaper of the 4.But,all are very close in price.

Since I like to listen to music om my good 'ole stereo speakers, I'd get the Onkyo, with B speakers. Get 'em while you still can.

Thats a great point Kab.To be honest I never even noticed that the onkyo had B speakers.;)

I picked up a Pioneer SC-37 about a year ago. It seems to work OK :D

For speakers, check out Newegg for Polk speakers. Newegg carries a line that is a hybrid of the old/new lines from Polk. Not sure why or how they got involved, but for the price - the monitor II line is pretty tough to beat.
