Its just sad when they come out with an awesome product like the Hopper and you find out that you actually need 2 of them to make it function properly.

Not function properly, but as advertised. The Hopper works just fines. However, Dish does have a habit of going a little over with the asterisk'd claims. Record up to 6 things at once... well M-F during primetime... and you don't choose what 4 of those recordings are.

If Dish wanted a great product, they would design the thing with slots in the back to add more tuners simmilar to what you do when you want to add an over the antenna tuner.

There is nothing wrong with three timers. There are a ton of spoiled rotten TV viewers out there that seem to think DVR recording is a birth right. Three timers is not bad at all. Some households may need more, but not all of them.

We are not power recorders, but with our family of four the second hopper for us eliminates any possible live/recording conflicts.

I'm adding a second hopper to my setup come this next weekend. I just bought another one from dishdepot.com. I will use it to replace a joey in the master bedroom. Then it will hold my wife's decorating shows and my son's kid cartoon crap. During the day we can hardly watch anything live ,because the tuner is being used for either my wife's HGTV shows or my kids cartoon crap. Try watching the shooting incident in Wisconsin on CNN Saturday , and it kept trying to tune to Sponge Bob Square Butt show. I decided then this won't due come the fall ,when the new fall season starts. Can't wait to see how this whole integration thing works on the second hopper.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get Netflix for Nick cartoons (such as Spongebob) than to buy a second hopper and then pay a monthly fee (I presume) on top of that?

There is no extra fee, it's the same as the replaced Joey, just the purchase or upgrade cost.

Let me first state that I realize every household has different TV watching habits and needs, there is no one size fits all solution.

I have been reading about folks needing two hoppers so they have Increased recording capacity and Storage capacity as well. I don't understand how folks can record and ultimately watch all the tv they are recording? We have a 722 with ota, we do record a few shows, mostly when we aren't at home or because of time conflicts, I find that we often don't watch these recordings for days, and by the time we do the show has repeated anyway and we probably watched it. We have so many DVDs that are watched once, redbox is cheap even if they don't have the newest movies, and Netflix and Hulu plus have a decent selection of movies and TV, as well as stuff that we might not have discovered other wise.

So it boggles my mind when I read about the folks who NEED a second hopper! I'm not criticizing at all I just can't wrap my head around it! I suppose if there was an easy way to archive the recordings so they could be watched without the Dish equipment it would make more sense to me but, and I realize we can't discus hacking here, there isn't so...

Again this is not intended to be a criticism at all, just one mans thoughts...

it comes in handy on days like tuesday. we record many different things on all 4 tuners. then on wednesday, when there is nothing worth wathing, we watch the tuesday stuff. so, it isn't needed EVERY day but on the congested days they would come in handy.

Hmmmm. I think I'm going to have to go look over Amazon Instant Video & maybe Netflix to see how much of what we watch is actually available.

Cheaper? Than Netflix? I'm presuming you mean that would include buying just released over air shows, which would most certainly add up to be at least as expensive. Netflix is a very good after the fact supplement, not a great instant prime time entertainment provider.

I could have got by with 1 hopper and 2 joeys but there would have been days I wished for more tuners, OTA might have been enough but for 100.00 with no additional monthly fees it will be worth it.

Too many of the military themed programs I watch are not free at Amazon Instant Video, even with Prime membership. And the current season of Project Runway is fee based. As are some programs my wife watches. It adds up quick, even though most seem to be $1.99 or $1.89 if you buy the season.

Actually we have Netflix on his X-box & he watches it quite often. But he also like to watch some other shows recorded that are teen shows on the satellite. He has had a dvr sat receiver in his room since he was born. He wouldn't know what to do with out one, just like his daddy.

Talk about spoiled! When I was a kid in the 80s, we got a stick for Xmas and we were happy to get it.

I just don't see the point of this statement. Is wanting and demanding a DVR as part of our paid-for service becoming one of the seven deadly sins? Is it akin to gluttony to need six tuners for a whole house setup?

about two months ago, only 2% of hopper owners were getting two of them. If I were to guess, maybe it's up to 3 or 4 percent by now. It's shockingly low. Techs seem to mention installs of 1H/2J as common.

At best maybe someone could claim that the advertising with 6 channels is misleading, but most people don't need 6 tuners anyways. It's an argument that affects too few people.
