Right now i have 2 (211k receivers) and 1 (222k receiver) non with dvr functions.

I spoke with a Dish Network representative and ask if I added an external hard drive to one of the 211k, besides the $40 dollars one time fee, would i be charged dvr monthly fee since i added the ehd to one of the 211k receiver. He told me no, and told me my 211k will still not function as a dvr even if I added the hard drive. It will not record live tv like a dvr.

Also right now my 222k is connected to the router. I would like to move that receiver to another location, and the router is not anywhere near it. Do i need to plug in the ethernet port for that receiver? None of my other receivers are connected to the internet besides that one.

So my question is would my 211k receiver function as a dvr and record live tv if I added an external hard drive to it? And would i be charge a monthly dvr fee?

Thanks
Lai

Your 211 will work as a dvr if you add an ext hd to it. You will be able to pause live tv and record when you want (single tuner only). Your program guide will also go out further.

Ive had one for 2 years now.

And keep in mind that once you pay the $40, that covers any/ALL 211's on your account, so you could add an HDD to the other one for ONLY the cost of the HDD itself.
There is no harm in NOT having the 222 connected to the router; doesn't really serve a purpose...

Thank you for your fast reply, I guess that customer representative didn't know what he was talking about. I asked him what will it do then, if it won't record live tv. He told me that i have to put movies, videos, etc into that hard drive from other source, plug it in to the receiver so i can watch it on tv.

Another question, if i hook up a slingbox 350 to that 211 receiver with the EHD will it be able to play movies from the EHD from the slingbox player..website..?

Thanks

Yes because the video via sling is just like watching from your tv with your remote. You can navigate the menus and access the EHD.

Thanks for the fast reply.
One more question. The hard drive that dish recommend: WD My Book AV 1tb . If the record/playback doesn't work so well, can i still use that hard drive for my laptop as a back up instead? Sorry for all these questions.

thanks

You would need to format the drive before using it again with the PC, but yes you can use it again with your pc. When you first hook it up to the 211,it will be formatted. When you hook it back to the pc, format again.

The drive will have Linux formatting, partitioning, and file structure on it after it is connected to the 211k and formatted.

If you want to use it on a PC afterwards it will have to be cleaned, re-partitioned, and re-formatted.

Last May, I added an EHD to my 211k. After power-up, an activation phone number
was displyed on my TV. Dialing that, it went into a "phone tree: and after a few keystrokes
on the phone, activation proceeded without having to talk to a customer service rep.

been using my 211k/ehd setup for quite a while now, works great for our small 2-person household. In fact, our little 640gb hdd is almost full. Wonder if hdd prices have come down significantly since the flood....?
