Hopper HDMI doesn't work

So a few days ago I made the switch from U-verse to Dish, and so far I am loving it! There was a bit of an issue with the Dish install (installer only came with one Hopper so a different guy had to come out the next day), and I'm still adjusting to some settings, but overall impressions are great. I didn't think I'd really like/use PTAT, but it is becoming one of my favorite features. Anyway!

When I removed the old U-verse install I left my HDMI cable plugged into the HDMI 1 input of my TV, figuring that way it would be one less thing the installer would have to mess with. I let him know this, and he said that he'd use the existing HDMI cable. Well then last night I switched my input from what it was set to to do something else on my TV, and when I switched back to HDMI-1 (the channel I thought the Hopper was connected to) and was getting no signal. Upon checking I found that it was connected via component cables. Even though it isn't a huge difference picture quality wise, I wanted HDMI if only so there was less cord clutter on the back of my TV, so I pulled out the Hopper and noticed the HDMI cable that was there was not the one I left (I later found the HDMI that I left for the installer stashed in the box the hopper came in). So I connected the HDMI cable that was there. After switching the channel to HDMI 1 I noticed that it was getting no signal, so I tried two other HDMI cables with the same results. I even tried plugging the cables into HDMI 2, 3 and 4 with no luck, and tried plugging the cable from HDMI 1 into another source to be sure it wasn't my TV.

So long story short - the Hopper's HDMI output doesn't work. While I know this isn't a huge deal, my main fear is that if my box didn't work perfectly new out of the box, what kind of issues am I going to experience later? I work with computers for a living and sometimes (not always) a sign that something is about to go horribly wrong is when one function stops working.

I disagree, it is a huge deal. As navychop said, contact Dish...

I had some experiences where a particular television just wouldn't pair properly with the dish receiver too. Happens less often now than it used to but it does still happen.

There are several tv models that dont do the hdmi handshake with the hopper.
If this is the case, another hopper won't fix it.
See if the tv can have it's software updated, otherwise the workaround is still component cable
If you can, plug the hopper into another tv with hdmi to confirm

I had this issue between my Hopper and my older Toshiba HDTV, but only with the original, factory (bare minimum) software. We, the installer and I, re-connected it with component and all proceeded fine. The following day or two later, I tried the HDMI connection and it worked. I realize that this probably doesn't help you though as your box now has the full-blown Hopper software.

As mentioned about the 'handshake', in case of glitches, you're supposed to turn both devices off (in the case of the Hopper, pull the power cord), and then turn one on first, wait a few seconds (15-30 won't hurt), then turn on the other device. I don't remember the order but I THINK it's TV first.

That's kinda what I was thinking lol.

Anyway, I'll have to try the different options listed here, if nothing works I'll call Dish tomorrow and see what they say. Either way, I'll let you all know

Thanks for all of the help guys!

Definitely start by connecting to a different TV if you have one available. That would be my first move.

Well, the issue has been solved!

Doing the one thing I didn't think of (but was said here a few times) I took the hopper to my slightly older Samsung HDTV upstairs, plugged it in via HDMI and sure enough it worked. I took it back downstairs to my newer LG TV, plugged it back in to HDMI and sure enough it worked. Not sure what the change was, as I tried completely unplugging it from the wall the first time I tested everything and the HDMI still didn't work (and no settings were changed at all), so perhaps it was just a handshake bug.

Whatever the cause it works great now, so thank you all for the help!

I just started having a similar issue with my Hopper and an LG TV. Every now and then (usually 1-2 times a week), when I turn the TV on it is showing me the 'No Signal' message. If I unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in, it comes back. I tried a different cable, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. It's just weird that it works most of the time, but then goes wonky every so often.
