Since it is 2013 dont you guys think Dish should dump NON HD channels. I cant see any real need to carry any non HD channels. If they decide to add any channels in 2013 they shoudl be HD only. Am I off base? Just wondering. Non HD content looks terrible on todays HD tvs.

so I guess any channel out there that is carried in HD but Dish doesnt carry should be dropped then (using your theory)? I'm sure there would be folks mad about losing Disney or ESPNU as example

Also...there are probably more SD receivers out there than HD

Other points aside, another reason to keep SD channels is the fact that many HD channels show 4x3 SD content in stretch-o-vision, with no way to adjust it from your TV. In that case, the availability of the SD channel is useful.

Well... I think it would be great if Dish dumped the SD version of channels they have in HD, just to save bandwidth. How many SD customers do they have remaining?

Way more SD customers still than HD. It will be a few more years still till SD channels are dropped.

They dumped the SD versions of locals on eastern arc..the reciever just down rez the hd to sd for sd tv's

I think they could do the same thing for national channels. Carry the hd versions and down rez to sd for those who have sd receivers. But I think DISH could really accomplish this if they did away with all SD receivers period & replace with hd ones only. Then it would make sense.

Too bad the down-rezzing doesn't fix the stretch-o-vision problem.

I feel that we reached the time to begin to force SD out. People are constantly calling for 3D content, but HD isn't even perfected yet do to SD hogging up the room. I get that SD uses less space than HD. But why keep repeats there?

Then we have channels like ESPN who doesn't even use true SD anymore. They down convert the HD into a letterbox screen. So Disney won't let Dish have those channels in HD, because they want to charge Dish twice to simply have the true HD image, then have a second image that ESPN compressed for them.

Basically it's time to slowly force it out.

The channel provider's currently require the carriage of both. In some cases like Disney they want to charge for both copies, and to get the HD version you have to have the SD version.

Yep. Watching HD content on an SD-tv is a lot better than watching SD content on an HD-tv.

Dish is swapping older receivers and they sgould just go with all HD equipment. HD is the norm now, and it should be illegal for them to charge extra for it, or deny it in any of their packages.

I would agree with most of what you said. Now Dish has all of these local channel companies out there trying to get Dish to carry their multi channels and those are only in SD. Currently where I live Dish has a dispute with our local ABC affiliate and Dish dropped them. KCRG wants about a 500% increase and they want Dish to carry there 2 extra channels. I can see Dish making a deal on a price but I see no way in which they carry the multi channels. Could you imagine the bandwith problems if Dish had to carry every providers multi channels?

I would rather Dish focus on getting the HD feed of all SD channels they have. My daughter watches tons of Disney, TeenNick, Nick Jr. etc. and it all looks terrible. If they offer the channel in HD we should be getting it in HD.

By any chance are you a Supreme Court Justice? That kind of attitude is FORCING folks to buy Healthcare Insurance they cannot afford. I guess, after Healthcare and HD we can force folks to buy Jitter Bugs and if you haven't noticed the 3D demands have faded and is all but dead!

If Dish is still transmitting the SD version of HD channels for SD customers, then they cannot re-purpose the bandwidth and devote it for all HD.

I personally go out of my way to avoid any and all SD. If I can't find the show I want on the two providers I have. I will wait for the season to be released on BD.

Funny. Keep in mind the Sat Guys use policy. No Politics. However, if you want to PM me I will have a private discussion with you. You never know how much we might agree. I don't see the correlation between HD and Healthcare. In fact without SD, you really can't be charged an HD fee. One that I don't pay as I have HD free for life.

I agree that is a problem. But that is a separate problem outside the forced bundling of SD and HD repeats.
