Am I supposed to be able to hook up my Dish Network Receiver to the AV Receiver?

My wife is a technophobe. When I switched from an old Dennon AR(non hdmi) to an Onkyo with hdmi she was able to figure it out very quickly. In addition to the Dish DVR, I have a cable dvr, bluray, dvd recorder and the tv all connected through the Onkyo.

Well, yall know how this is. You really want to try to find a unit that does what YOU want.

If I really cant get it and at a price I can afford, I'll get something else... :(

Just a quick question as I'm not a big avr Guy. Is there any particular reason why audio and video must go thru the avr? Why not just audio and have the video signal straight to the TV?

Because some prefer to have one device switch between components rather than having several like I do. I have a switch for the HDMI & another for the optical cable, which works just fine for me.

In MY case I do it for two reasons. First so I can have everything in one place so to speak and if I need to switch to a different source, I can simply
do it through the receiver rather than going through the tv and changing outputs (not that big a deal) and the second one is amplification.
My hearing's going bad.

This is NOT a big deal when watching the DISH but very often it is when watching other things. Bottom line, I don't HAVE to but I want to do it this way.

I think you have your answer.

Trade offs. Look at Onkyo & Yamaha. Detailed equalizer control may have to be sacrificed.

Almost seems like I have to. I DID talk to the guy that sold me the Denon and he sells other brands too
and he didn't much believe that the Denon's were more finicky than other brands but what the hell do I know.
All I know is I'm having problems with things that SHOULD work but then, this IS the story of my life.
I buy all these cool things and half the time, I can't get them to work :(

Do you know anyone that will let you borrow their avr? That may solve the puzzle of whether or not it's the Denon.

The only one I know that has anything won't do it. He's got his stuff in an entertainment center and doesn't want to mess
with it. :(

I've got awesome friends...

Are you serious??? Who in their right mind is going to disconnect EVERYTHING to "lend" it out???

Yes, I am serious. Still a bit snarky I see. I would let a friend borrow mine if it would help him out. That's what friends do for friends, they help friends.

Being a friend IS a pain in the a$$ as it usually involves you going out of your way to do things.

If you're going to the post office and I say, "hey, drop this in the mail box for me" it's not a big deal
but if I ask, "hey which way are you headed" and despite that you're NOT going to be even close to the post office
you DO go out of your way to do me a favor...well, that's what a favor is and frankly, that's what friends
are for but hey, that's just my opinion :)

Guiri - If you are still within your return window, I suggest you return your Denon, as others have suggested, and try another brand. If passed it, then maybe sell on Craigslist.

Personally, I would recommend Yamaha and Pioneer over Onkyo in that price range. Newegg often has mid-level Pioneers on sale. Yamaha is usually less likely to find on sale. Onkyo is easy to find highly discounted. I prefer Yamaha and Pioneer from an audio perspective. But, Onkyo does tend to be feature-rich, most bang for the buck. And, they are all better than Sony.

Yes, I can return it, no problem. The dude that sold it also sells Denon and he didn't much recommend Onkyo (I'm just sayin').

The Pioneer which is what my buddy has (and I fount it for him at a good price, the 1022) doesn't have the manual EQ option
which I kinda had my mind set on. The Yamaha does but some people weren't sure about whether it'll stream Pandora through
their network connection or not.

Any ideas here?

....

Gary, I just saw your sig...have you seen this clip? :)

I just picked up the Yamaha RXA1010. It streams Pandora just fine.
