The company in July also plans to launch a more rugged version of its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S 4. The new phone, tentatively called the Galaxy S 4 Active, will be waterproof and dust proof, but Samsung is aiming to maintain the look and feel of the S 4, according to this person.

I have 2 family members that have ruined a phone by getting it wet. Both of them lost it in a beverage! Hard to believe but it happens!

nice! i like that especially since i do work where there is saw dust. so beverage huh? never heard that one before. i've heard toilets, sinks, pools and even deep puddles but never in a drink.

My sister was texting over a cup of coffee and it slipped out of her hands and right into the coffee. My niece had it on a chair and a drink on the floor beside the chair - phone fell off the chair and into the drink...

Tough-Phones.It's about time. We've had waterproof, shockproof, dust proof watches for many years, surprised it has taken them this long to make tough phones.

almost a phone

My buddies wife lost her iPod Touch 32gb to a big cup of tea.
I believe it slid off the center console into the (occupied) cup holder in her van, when she stepped on the brakes.

He worked on it for months, then gave it to me.
Never did get it going again.
Just part of "planned obsolesce" of modern electronics.
...and a waste of several hundred dollars. :down
.

We've lost some to wet boiler room surfaces and floors. Once, maybe just to very high humidity when venting. And, of course, to concrete.

I sent my Motorola V750 Adventure through the washing machine with my laundry. It came out looking like a wet rat. I took the battery out and left the back cover off for three days. Put the battery back in, turned it on, and have been using it for three years since.

Any word yet on the Cost of the "Rugged" version ?

Btw, the link above that goes to the Wall Street Journal requires a Subscription to view.

I put it in as a search on google which usually will let you view the WSJ article for free. Toms Hardware has a short article on it also linked in the post.

I tried the link again it still works. Try opening the link in an incognito (chrome) or in private (ie) browser window. It should let you read the article. If you open in a regular browser I think you only get to read it one time before it cuts you off.

There have been tough phones before, even tough smart phones, just not any really good ones. Interesting.

It could possibly pry me away from the iPhone universe if Apple does not make a move to match it.

My wife dropped a phone into a cup of sugar water (with some coffee and creamer added for flavoring). I knew I could try and salvage it but a) in the days/weeks prior, she had mentioned wanting to upgrade/replace her phone (it was eligible) and b) you can't dry out sugar. We let it sit, nonetheless, and it would at random times have dozens of keys pressed one after the other !

As for rugged phones, I know VZW, and surely others, offered one from Casio. It was just a dumb phone, not a smartphone. The face looked sorta like a watch-face.
