DISH announces FREE iPad Promotion

I knew a lady who didn't want to know the price of anything she bought from this particular store. She only wanted to know how much more per month.

And when she actually paid something off, they called her to come in and buy something else.

LOT of people like that. For many, it'll be "free iPad" and no math will be done.

It's a good deal for some people, because they will see it that way. If you prefer to do otherwise, fine. We view "value" differently.

"If you do the math, its no deal. You basically paying an inflated price for an Ipad by paying an extra $35 on your satellite bill for 12 months."

You'd be paying that amount without the promotion, so it can easily be seen as "free iPad."

1. Nothing for existing customers. Would be nice if we got a chance to "re-up" (new one or two year contract) in exchange for an ipad, wouldn't it? Or as a loyalty bonus (For being a customer x number of years)? Guess everyone should follow the incentives and do the churn thing. By the time we get back to Dish, maybe they'll be offering free cars. ;)

2. Nothing for people with less than perfect, or unestablished credit, I imagine. The rich get richer, while the less well off finance new ipads for said better off people by paying the same rate without getting the ipad. Yet, I'm sure the ads will make it sound like it's for everyone. You call in to order it and- bait and switch, you're offered some other thing without an ipad. Just like the ad a few years ago with free install with no startup costs and free HD for life got me to call, and I wound up paying for install plus a month upfront, and getting stuck with SD-only equipment. I think if they advertise an ipad for new customers, all new customers should be eligible, but I doubt they will be.

3. To those who complain about complaints about a "free item", let me just pre-empt you by saying, it's not a complaint about a free item if we aren't getting the item for free. :) Most of the people you'll find on this thread are not prospective new customers. They are existing customers who aren't being offered a free ipad at all. A few might be prospective customers who won't get offered the new ipad due to credit. You wouldn't hear me complain that it's an ipad 2 instead of an ipad 4 if Dish called to tell me they were shipping it the mail for free and I'd get it in a few days. ;) We're not getting it.

Also, anything that requires a contract that requires you to pay a certain amount money for x number of months or years isn't really free free. It's quasi-free. You don't pay money upfront, but you're paying for it in a roundabout way. It's like putting something on a credit card or getting a loan that you have to pay back with interest.

4. Having said all that, I'd be thrilled if Comcast or Directv would offer me a free ipad for signing up, and not base it on a credit check or anything, just flat out "Agree to stick with us for a year or two, and it's your's". I'd call and switch tomorrow. I'd also strongly consider signing a new 1-2 year contract with Dish for a free ipad (They might also have to include the HD equipment they didn't give me the first time around- that combined with an ipad and I'd definitely do it). I'm a prospective churner if I see an offer I like elsewhere, or when my cable Internet goes to full price this summer and it might make financial sense to bundle it with television from the cable company. But I'd gladly stay for the right offer.

But I think the real issue Dish is going to run into is retention 2-3 months down the road when customers who took the Ipad are going to wonder why their bill is $80-$100 per month for basic service.
You could play Devils Advocate and say the same thing about DIRECTV.

They sign up and get service for $55 a month, then halfway through their two month commitment their bill jumps to $110 for the same programming.

Its all just smoke and mirrors in the long run and both companies are working to make as much money as they can... and that is what a business is supposed to do. :)

Well the ipad is something I'm personally not interested in.

From a sales standpoint I hope it's something I don't have to buy & get reimbursed for on qualifying customers after the fact.

My other concern is who is going to take responsibility for trouble shooting these things?

I'm just thinking out loud here & realize these issues are probably not appropriate in this forum.

This may have been mentioned already, but what is the cost of an ipad if a person were to get it on their own?

It was mentioned earlier. This is the iPad 2 so you can buy one for MSRP of $400 from Apple or get it for $350 from resellers or about $320 refurb on eBay.

Why was the iPad 3 discontinued, but the iPad 2 not?

I believe it was because the 3 and 4 are both retina iPads. There weren't really any features added to the 4 that weren't in the 3. It was just a spec increase.

There is a clear difference between the 2 and the 3/4. Retina display, Siri, better cameras etc. If people saw the 3 for $100 less than the 4 with all the same features and a slightly slower processor they would have a harder time selling the 4. I believe they discontinued the 3 and stuck with the 2 so their best model would be more differentiated from the lower cost entry model.

Perhaps later on they will try a free Nexus 7 and a credit on their bill, a little bit of both. I can see the complaints from people that have issues streaming sling even if it is due to poor internet connectivity.

This could give us an idea of what promotions we could see with a Sprint/Dish merger. Free Sprint i-phone when you bundle along with a discount on your Dish and Sprint bill plus the bundling discount.

I'm not too excited about this ipad promotion (yet).

If it helps get a few sales then I'll be excited, I'll just have to wait & see how it plays out. For now I stand a neutral ground.

It's something different and should create a buzz. It's going to take a lot of advertising but I'm remaining positive.

I wonder if you can still use non programming incentives, like the $100 visa gift card offer that VISA has. Will they still offer the $10 off for 12 months for signing up online? Should be interesting to see on May 22nd
