When I had the VIP722k and I went to the settings for the satellite to "Point Dish" to see the signal strength of the satellites, you could input your Zip Code. I am not sure why this is done except maybe to find the correct timezone to load the proper TV guide for your viewing area. I have had the new Hopper for about 3 weeks now and I can not find where to enter the Zip Code. Am I missing something or is it no longer relevant?

Zip code was needed on the Point Dish screen to provide you the proper Azimuth, Elevation, and Skew for your particular dish setup. And that information was not kept up-to-date (there were no angles for EA setups, and they still had 105 and 148 listed!)

Information about your location (for the guide, locals, etc.) is obtained from your account info.

Try going to Settings -> Network Setup -> Tests -> View Counters - and you should see your zip code on the third line.

Zip code was for your info only, nothing to do with performance of the system, essentially irrelevant.

Thanks for the info. Yes I did find my zip code listed.

When Dish first came out, you had to buy and install the system yourself. It came with a compass and the dish mount had all the markings on it for you to aim it yourself. As others have said, you inputted your zip and it would then tell you where to aim your dish. From there you would fine tune it yourself. Then there was only one satellite, if I remember correctly. This was at least 15 years ago.
