Hey guys, I finally decided to cut the cord at my apartment and cancel our dish account there. I tried to live with locals but its almost impossible to pick them up OTA.

Right nowI have a hopper with sling connected to my home dsl (3mbps down 1mbps upload). And the PQ is nice on my ipad, iphone and laptop.

So far this is what I have accomplished.

Setup 1- apple TV 2
-hardwired to my network at the apartment (5mbps down, 2mbps up)
-Airplay works!.... Only when in HQ mode and since my home internet is slow, Its stutters in HQ. SQ is watchable but airplay won't work and i don't understand why(only sound)

At this moment the solution to get this working is to upgrade the internet at home where the dvr is. The problem is that no isp offers more than 1mb upload in that area.

Setup 2- Windows 8 laptop connected via HDMI
-works and looks good when I select "better" in the dish anywhere quality settings.
-is a small hassle to carry the laptop and not being able to work while I watch tv.
-need to use my ipad as a remote in order to control the tv

Is there any other way to get sling content onto a tv? If not I'm thinking of building a cheap HTPC or buying a super cheap desktop and plugging it into the tv with a wireless keyboard and mouse.

A used dedicated computer does work well as you are already thinking. To watch my Slingbox using a dedicated computer I use a wireless mouse also.

Yeah, I have an old desktop that may work but it only has VGA out, no HDMI or DVI

I'm thinking of looking for a small cheap HTPC to build for my apartment. As a mouse I found a nice app that lets me use my phone as one.
I'll be on a tight budget so I'll be looking to save money if I can

You typically can get very high resolution out of the "VGA" or RGB connector, not 1080p, but very competitive. One issue is that HBO content will likely not play through it.

Remember that you may want to enter in text for a remote.

I picked up a mini TV computer of Amazon for 50 bucks not long ago that plugs into the HDMI port on the TV with a very short cable and a wireless mouse/keyboard works well with it and it is wifi capable. I'm not saying its outstanding pq but if your looking for a cheap sling receive device you almost can't beat it.

I take it the Android Dish Anywhere client is what works on this TV/computer stick?

Yep I do that also.....Still best for me is my tablet has an hdmi out...I have it in a dock and throw it on my screen or just take it with me....The mini computers are ok, much better when rooted with an after market ROM.

So you just load up the dish app and it works? This could be something interesting since all I can watch is SQ so full 1080 wouldn't be required. I also thought about a raspberry pi but I've heard that the sling extension on chrome wont work with linux.

Perhaps I missed something, but why don't you buy the video cable for your Ipad? Plug it into the Ipad and run an HDMI cable to an input on your TV.

I have used this setup to watch my stand alone SlingBox, Netflix, USTVNow. Ipad has plenty of processing power and built in 3G and WiFi.

Your biggest problem is slow upload speeds which will result in marginal picture quality using your SlingBox.

Good catch! That's the best answer I use my Android Tablet with HDMI out like that with excellent results. Then he can use his computer to work while watching TV AND use the computer to change channels etc....

Does dish allow HDMI out on the ipad? I thought they had it blocked out by default. This is actually interesting. I may go and pick up the adapter at noon. My father has a galaxy tab 7.0 and hes been thinking of buying the adapter as well. I'll go to the store and confirm.

I believe it's been stated by some users here that if you get an apple tv, that Dish allows sling from the ipad to work with airplay. I'm like Tampa I use the hdmi out of my android tablet to my tv when Im at my lake house

I can confirm that airplay for live and recorded content works on the apple tv. The problem is it won't let me send video to the apple tv unless I select HQ mode. I also tried to airplay with my iphone 5 and got the same results. This is why I'm a bit skeptical about getting the hdmi adapter fearing to get the same result as with the apple tv.

After I get out of work i'll stop at the mall and pick it up and report back.

Programs transferred to the iPad from the Hopper can only be viewed on the iPad. I bought the HDMI adapter and it doesn't work. Perhaps due to Apple restrictions. Sigh. A big part of why we moved to Hopper was to DL programs and watch them on a HDTV at our RV.

Your DSL line is the weak link. It is likely to put the hurt on your ability to Sling in high enough quality to serve a conventional television.

Yes. Dish anywhere apparently from the Google play store.

But just so you guys know that apparently is intended for smaller screens, so even on HQ it doesn't have great PQ. Its good enough for my TV on my deck near my hot tub though.

Actually it can look pretty decent for a stream. I stream it to my 60in dlp at the lake and it looks pretty decent, certainly not HD but good enough for the occasional weekend use. I have 6mb dsl at lake and 25/3 cable at home. I use a Toshiba Thrive tablet connected via hdmi to my dlp

I think 6mb is probably the min to get decent quality on a large screen. I have tried it in hotels traveling and 3mb connections and it wasn't as good.

Agree. From my Tablet using my Slingbox APP with the OTA tuner (Or Dish receiver) connected via HDMI to my 55" TV it looks good certainly for the few times I use it. (Mainly for news from my other hometown, or watching a game not televised where I currently may be etc...)

if you want something easy, get a wdtv live box. this is your best bet as it has the slingplayer app, and a lot of other streaming content.
