I had this receiver for about a year with no problems, today in the morning I noticed the receiver reboots after 4-5 minutes
I dont get an error code just simply hopper is starting up, the led light is solid green, I left the receiver unplugged for about a minute
issue still persists, tech support has no idea what could be causing this as well.

I noticed the fan is not spinning while watching tv, only when it boots up it spins for a while.

Your problem sounds similar to mine. No matter what I did... red button reset or pulling the plug... the receiver just showed the Hopper Starting Up sign. I called Dish Tech Support and they had no answer, so a new HWS is due to arrive tomorrow by UPS. They suspected that my hard drive died. I'm wondering if the new software update put the operating system into a bad loop.

The short answer is something has failed. Either some kind of internal failure, or a voltage issue or failure. The phone CSRs have no way to know the specific failure reason. A field technician won't be able to tell either. Only option is to replace the receiver (after attempting a hard reset, and also plugging straight into the wall, if it was plugged into a power strip or surge suppressor). I would guess that when that receiver is broken down on a testing bench, a rebuild tech will be able to find the failure reason, but by then, it's a moot point.

(edit) P.S. I don't suspect hard drive failure, as that will usually manifest itself with a 311 failure code, and the user will still usually be able to watch live TV.

Try moving your hdmi cable to input two on your tv. Maybe this is a CEC issue with your tv causing the loop. I would try that as a last ditch effort.

Guys I found the root cause of the DVR rebooting, I disconnected the hard drive and let the hopper run for about an 2 hours it didn't reboot anymore.
I connected the hard drive to my PC and I'm using Ubuntu to recognize the hard drive, it failed the SMART check.

So at this point I'm backing up the HD to a new 2TB hard drive but it's taking forever it's been about 8 hours.

If that doesn't work I guess I have to replace the receiver :(

How many programs are you transferring? There used to be a general rule of thumb on the amount of minutes per program hour is takes to transfer MPEG4 recordings, but I can't recall at the moment

I'm backing up the entire hard drive, I tried a different linux command it should take about 5-6 hours, hopefully it works
the hopper has been running fine since last night without the hard drive installed only issue is the joey's can't communicate with the hopper without a hard drive installed :(

Thanks, Lucky. Tried it and it still doesn't work.

My new HWS arrived here last night according to the UPS Tracking site, but they don't have Saturday or Sunday delivery. It's due here on Monday. Two more days watching commercials.... Eeeeek!

I started getting the spontaneous reboots after the S418 update. No errors or message, just a reboot. I've also had the screen momentarily freeze on occasion prior to the reboot. On most occasions the reboot has occurred it will finalize on it's own but a couple of times it just stayed on a blank screen & required a reset to complete the reboot properly. I'd normally think this is a hardware issue (and, it may be) but I'm curious about it since it began immediately with the software update.

If you still have that box you should try moving the hdmi cable to the hdmi 2 input on your tv instead of hdmi 1and see if that stops it from rebooting.

Actually it's connected to a Denon 4310CI receiver as part of a complete home theater setup. I've always used the "Auto" input selection mode on the Denon on all devices but I will switch the Hopper input to HDMI (only) - can't see how it would matter though. FWIW I use nothing but really high quality cabling throughout.

EDIT: DISH has offered me a HWS @ no charge replacement. The lure of the Sling is appealing - any reason not to take it?

I have the same problem, it happens at random hours but mostly in the night. I am watching tv and all of a sudden it freezes, I look at the tv that is connected to the hopper and I see it starting up. Basically it reboots except it has happened before. Problem is we got a replacement, lost all the recordings and yet it happens with the new box. I am mad because I loose out on recording, some that only air once. All I see is Moca connection lost and a huge message of what to do and what we have already done many times. We switched from direct tv but I think that was a mistake or we switched to the wrong tv provider.

IS your hopper in an open tv stand so that air can get to it? IF not this will cause reboots. I had a tv stand with doors with glass insets and this caused my receiver to reboot like mad. Took the doors off and no more reboots. If this isn't the issue then there is something else at work. Power surges, can also cause problems. Stacking other receivers like A/v or blu ray player, on it or under it can cause heat related issues that leads to reboots too. But rebooting like crazy at random times isn't normal.

Obviously an overheatig issue causing the reboots. Called tech was instructed to remove any items above or below the unit. Did so, unplugging the power and waiting for it to cool down then doing a reset when powering up fixed the problem for a short time. Again over heated with doors closed on entertainment center. Left them open, problem occured again rebooted l6 times while I was on phone with tech...got replacement. Two days later, Same problem, second hopper, opened glass door of entertainment center, performed a reset all good so far.....

Entertainment center has a fan and a temp sensor....unit was not hot to the touch. There maybe be a software bug causing this, I have seen this with bad hardware, but two hoppers in a row exhibiting the same issue sounds more like software.

Well my first ViP622 died of heat within the first month, sitting out in the open in an air conditioned room. The second one I took the top cover off and mounted a fan blowing downward into it. It's been running about ten years, in a cabinet with open back but glass front doors.

I halfway expect to have to do the same thing to my new Hopper 3, Was really hoping they'd solved the heat issue by now.

I suggest you take it. I have two HWS and am happy.

Jack, I think you've got an installation problem.

I am on my third unit....keeps rebooting. Installer rewired entire path....same....talked with him after install repair and he stated that dish has a memo going around that it is virus related in their OS. It still reboots, finding that certain channels triger the reboot, and other actions such as recording a program and then changing channels to something else. Channels 122 SCI-FI, channel 105 USA and sometimes Bravo...on New years day, I wanted to watch the twilight zone marathon and the unit rebooted like ten times.

Customer support is clueless and say that it is a power problem in my house, I bought their surge suppresor and no change. If it is virus related I may have infected each of my units by transfering settings and recorded programs. I truely think it is a virus and it is on the harddrive, thus the recording issue when changing channels....but how this is related to Sci Fi etc I don't understand. I am planning on downgrading to the older hopper till they figure this out.

Not a heat issue....the units has open from=nt and back with fan and is never hot to the touch during reboot.

I had two HWS's (Hopper 2's) that both started rebooting all the time. Dish came in and installed Hopper 3's and have had no problem since.
