Transferring programs from EHD to Hopper with Sling

I just had my 2 Hoppers upgraded to the Hopper with Sling. Prior to the upgrade I transferred all my DVR programs to EHDs. When I connect the EHDs to the Hoppers, they seem to work OK and I can view all of the programming on the EHDs with no issue. The problem comes when I try to transfer programs back from my EHD to my Hopper with Sling. Each time I try a transfer, all seems well right up the last second of the transfer and then I get an error and the transfer aborts. As I said before, I have no trouble viewing any of the programs directly from the EHD. They work fine all the way through their completion. My current firmware rev is S338 on both Hoppers. Is this a bug in the latest Hopper firmware or am I doomed to view all my saved programs from the EHD:(?

My purpose for the upgrade was to be able to transfer programs to my Android devices... which I can not do if I can't transfer them from the EHD back to the Hopper:(:(:(.

From my experience, the External Hard Drive is inadvertently doing you a favor in causing problems with the transfer because you're better off just leaving those recordings alone. When connected, you can still select 'External Device 1' at any time from the menu to play them and they will behave the same as if they were on the Hopper. Eventually the contents of the External Hard Drive will be indexed and come up among your search results as well.

I say this because it never ended well when I successfully transferred shows and movies from my External Hard Drive to my Hopper or even moved recordings from the other Hopper to the External Hard Drive to introduce them onto my Hopper. It may not be evident right that second or day, but in a few days to a weeks time most or all of those recordings transferred from the External Hard Drive will become compromised. They save to the Hopper and have size and time length when you view them with Edit, but go to play them and you instantly get a pop-up message saying 'Event playback finished' but there is no way to start them over. You cannot forward or rewind to the beginning to view them. They're essentially ruined. I lost several movies and entire collected seasons of shows. Take it from me, once you have transferred anything to your External Hard Drive, just leave it on there.

He wants to transfer to Android....

From my experience and grief, right now the External Hard Drive is inadvertently doing you a favor in causing problems with the transfer because you're better off just keeping those recordings stored on the External Hard Drive. You can still select 'External Hard Drive 1' from the menu to play them and they will behave the same as if they were on the Hopper.

I say this because whenever I have successfully transferred shows and movies from my External Hard Drive to my Hopper or even taken recordings from the other Hopper and transferred them to the External Hard Drive and then back to my Hopper, it almost always has never ended well. It may not be evident right that second or day, but in a few days to a weeks time most or all of those recordings transferred from the External Hard Drive will become compromised. They save to the Hopper and have size and time length when you view them with Edit, but I go to play them and they act as if they have reached the end of playback. There is no longer any way to view them and they are essentially ruined. I have lost several movies and entire collected seasons of shows. Take it from me, once you have transferred anything to your External Hard Drive, just leave it on there.

I wish (among other things) that the HwS would tell you the correct EHD that failed.
Instead it says the failure is the last device looked at not the one doing that transfer.
This wouldn't matter if you only worked with one at a time.
But since I am reorganizing the shows, I usually have 3 or 4 transferring at a time.
I can figure it out by which is inactive but it leads to some confusing.

Please name the drives--I can only figure which is which by drive size and free space.
And the flashing or not activity lights.

That is his first problem..
Still, it seems as if the recordings need to be saved onto the Hopper from the EHD in order to be transferred to Android. If so then they're still being introduced to the Hopper, even if temporarily, when they didn't originate from there. If those archived recordings need to be saved onto the Hopper I wouldn't do it or I'd make sure to get them onto Android immediately.

Sadly, Scott has already reported they have no intention of doing so. Their response was to label each hard drive with a piece of cake. This tells me they don't even understand the problem, nor do they want to.

To the OP:

This is a known problem. It is not universal- I for one have no such problems. But some do.

You can rename your Location with the Remote Manager and even provide a custom name, so I wouldn't think it would be that much more difficult to implement this.

Of course not. They just don't see the value. Surprise!

Named EHDs and a BT keyboard/pointing device are what I'd love to see most. And both have been shot down by Dish.

The simplest case for naming the drives, requiring no changes to the drives, would be to name them from the first recording--alphabetic or storage order.
At least you would not be worst off than External Drive #. Probably should include the drive number for display only.
And fix the error messages to reflect the drive in error and not the last used.

This problem did not originate with S338. It has been around in some form since December and I have experienced EHD problems of one sort or another since I got my Hoppers in July 2012.
the symptoms change but seldom actually work perfect.

Nope, that's true. I experienced this too when transferring EHD contents to the Hopper where it is fine until it got stuck during transfer on the literal last second. This was supposed to have been addressed though in a current update. I haven't had the issue anymore though. All I do now though is transfer Hopper contents to my EHD. Even then I have failures which force me to retry but I never get stuck on the last second anymore.

EHDs and Hoppers seem to require a lot of patience because sometimes it takes awhile for the Hopper to even see it. I have noticed that since S338 after a reboot sometimes the Hopper doesn't see the EHD instantly and it takes some coaxing. Also some of my saved recordings play back with no audio and it's always the same ones being affected. It can be fixed with a reboot but then I encounter the problem where the Hopper may not see my EHD for awhile.

Everything you said here has INDEED been happening long before S338.

I didn't intend any of what I said to be taken as specific only to S338, if it was understood as that. What I can't help but notice though is I had fewer EHD problems with S335 than before the last update which came with my Hopper and now with S338 I'm getting some of them again along with some that are new to me. All the same, I do find it interesting to learn from your reply that the no audio playback from the EHD is not new. I was fortunate to never have experienced it before. I take some comfort in knowing it's at least a known issue. I have no explanation why it took S338 for me to have the issue but different people are affected differently. I was mostly speaking for myself concerning the Hopper not seeing the EHD because I'm aware it can be like that but it had gotten better for me on both Hoppers. The update seems to have encouraged it to revert back to its old ways and now requires some prompting on my part to get noticed again. I also have had it fail now at 1Sec left on a few transfers which had gone away since S335. I'm used to it just telling me there was a transfer error and thought I had seen the last of that other problem. I'm fairly new to the Hopper since upgrading from a ViP 722K HD/DVR Receiver. In that time I have had three software updates, S334, S335, and now S338. I just replaced my Hopper (I've gone through several) at the beginning of February and it's only mid-March. The first recordings I have stored on that are only from January 31st. The other Hopper in the living room had been around since December.

I still have two 7100 keyboards - sure wish they still worked with the current devices.

The Hopper has bluetooth. No reason they couldn't add bluetooth KB compatibility, other than choice.

They could also add a keyboardto Dish Explorer app, which would be nice. In fact, I'd like to see Dish Explorer for Android already. What's the hold up, Vivek? ;)

I bet we see BT support on the Joey sometime in the future.
I'd also bet that we don't see a Dish Explorer app on Android. From what we've seen, it's sort of being used to gather feedback and as a testing tool. We've seen features, the more popular ones, that were once only in Explorer implemented in Dish Anywhere app. They also rolled Hopper transfers into it.
