DIRT - Trying to cancel service

I haven't seen many posts where DISH didn't follow through on a cancellation but no doubt it happens. As for recording, I'm missing the big deal here, tell them you are recording before you start, then repeat that you told them you are recording when you start. In some states once one person says they are recording, the other is covered if they record as obviously both know a recording is taking place. Depends on the wording of the statute.

Paying by check with "Cancel all services at time of cashing check" is a legal form of cancellation. Similar to writing "Cashing agrees to Final payment" when you know you are indeed making a final payment. (May not work if it is obvious you owe more but would stop cold any further charges beyond that check)

I can't offer any wisdom on what states can or cannot record. I can only say that if a Dish CSR is told the call is being recorded, that agent is supposed to say "I do not give my permission for the call to be recorded", say nothing else about it, and then go on working to resolve your issue. If they do their job, they're not supposed to argue or fight a customer if they say that, they're only supposed to say what I mentioned.

I really hate hearing when a Dish agent does this, because if it's on the loyalty department (the only people who can cancel an account), those are not rookie agents. But they are measured on how many accounts they keep from cancelling, so with thousands of agents, I can see the possibility that a few would lie to a customer to manipulate their stats.

If you are unable to retrieve the LNB safely, don't worry about it. They really only fully expect the receiver and remote return. Do t return the reciever, and you'll be charged the LNB fee too. It's one of those "gotcha" kinda things

Some time ago (we are talking years), I used to be a loyalty agent, and I am disappointed that so few truly address the LNB now. It was always my job to mention the LNB, and if the customer mentioned they were unable to get it, I would click for the LNB waive code. My wording to customers was that if they had to climb on ANYTHING (even a stepladder), that I would waive it, that we at Dish did not want the customer to take any risk to get that LNB.

When you get the box and ship the receiver back, make sure that you get and keep a receipt from the UPS (FedEx?) store incase Dish never shows receipt of the equipment.

The box is going to have a tracking number on it. Simply write that down and store it. You can also track it! :)

Last time I had a receiver swapped out it arrived via UPS and the return label for the broken one was Fedex.

But I'm not sure who DISH uses to just return receivers from a cancelled account.

I had two 612's, after years of great service, crap out within a month of each other. UPS both ways. I think the depot was somewhere in NC, so maybe it depends how far away you are from one of their depots.

When my bro-in-law cancelled Dish several years ago he never got the box to return his receiver. He had to fight Dish or their collection agency for months.

Anyway, hopefully I won't have to go through the same.

......... When cancelling is difficult or frustrating, it tends to make me never want to go back to using the same company.

You can get that easily. If you are canceling, call in. If you don't get it, keep calling. Atleast one person will know where it is.

Is ^ this a multiple choice test? :biggrin

Just kidding. Which one do I return my receiver to if I don't get a box? I'm in California.

I agree with KAB. These are just suggestions, to prevent it from getting to the point of collections. If it came down to that.

Agreed. Even if Dish doesn't send the box, or it gets lost, a customer knows they need to return it. It's not really worth fighting over, I wouldn't think. If it goes to collections, is it really worth the ding on your credit to say "I'm right, Dish didn't send it".

The three addresses listed are the right ones. Pick one and send it if you don't get a return kit.

It's really not since it does say the customer is completely responsible for the return of equipment. Aka it is not dishes fault if no boxes are sent. That's done as a courtesy.
