Can I use 1000.4 Eastern Arc?

Hi guys,

Just signed up for Dish and a tech came today to install. He only checked for 1000.2 (110W, 119W, 129W). The problem with 1000.2 is that there is a limb in the way. However, when checking Dish 1000.4(61.5, 72.7, 77W) on dishpointer.com, I see that it looks to be perfect and nothing blocking it. Is there a reason he didn't check 1000.4 and can I even use it? I called Dish and the lady that I talked to said I would not lose any channels if I switched to 1000.4. Can one of you verify that for me?

Thanks,
Rustin

Your locals are on the Western Arc (110, 119, 129). You would not see your local locals on the EA...

Gotcha thanks. I just found The List, which helped a lot. Could I use an antenna and get my locals OTA? I'm assuming that eventually you will be able to get all locals on 1000.4 correct?

That depends upon a few factors.
The location of the transmitters, Direction of transmitters. Terrain between your home and the transmitters.
Go to antennaweb.org and follow the instructions to determine these factsors

I just checked on tvfool.com. Looks pretty good to me, all of my locals are green. Dish Hopper will put the guide info in there and everything right when plugging in an OTA antenna. Also I'll be able to record right? Does Dish planing on adding all locals to 1000.4?

Many, but not all, DMA's have locals on both orbits. However, they usually put HD locals on one arc and SD locals on the other. If you don't have locals on both arcs now, it's doubtful you will have anytime soon.

Alright thanks guys. Looks like I'll have to go with DirecTV instead for satellite TV, as I really don't want to hassle of putting up an OTA. Plus I live in an apartment on the first floor which I don't imagine is conducive for great signal from OTA. I was going to check the direction on dishpointer.com. Can you guys tell me what satellites I'd have to hit for DirecTV?

Directv uses 99/101/103 for most of it's broadcasting, they do also have programming off 110 & 119 but most people don't need them.

I think I finally decided that I'm going to go with Dish and get the OTA tuner to tune the locals. I know I can only tune one at a time, but that'll be ok. I have one of those leaf flat antennas and I'm picking up all of my locals except NBC. I can reposition and pick up NBC though, so I might get a better antenna and try that out. DirecTV is in the same direction as the western arc it seems, so that doesn't help the fact there is a branch in the way. :) Thanks for your help everyone. :) If you guys have any more ideas for my options I'd love to here them.

I'm concerned about which satellite that branch is blocking. If it's 129, you'll get little to no HDTV because most of the HD channels reside on 129. Can you be more specific which satellite (110, 119, 129) that the branch blocks? All of the channels do not reside on all of the satellites. Locals is one thing, the ability to receive any channels at all is another...

Almost all of the Dish 1000.2 are blocked. The Dish tech came out today and confirmed this. I select Dish 1000.4 on dishpointer.com and I'm good to go. I also verified the location with an iPhone app. I'll attach some pictures for reference. The first photo is 1000.2 and the second is 1000.4. I don't need to point towards 129 do I if I point toward 1000.4 satellites right?

Ok wow, I'm learning quite a bit of stuff through this whole thing.

I've been researching spot beams and it seems that since I live in Shreveport (I am about 175 miles from both Dallas and Little Rock) I should be in the spot beam for both. I am in Spotbeam 15 for which is the Dallas Local channel spot beam. The link for the picture for spot beam 14 for Little Rock appears to be broken so I can't view it. My parents and nearly all of my family live in Arkansas and get Little Rock locals. Could I simply do a service address change to a relatives location after the install and get locals from Little Rock. I've checked and they come from the eastern arc 61.5, which means I should be able to pick them up, unlike my Shreveport locals which are only western arc. Also, is Dish "ok" with this or will it be an issue?

This is called "moving", and it's done all the time. But you don't give Dish a lot of details other than your new service address. Wink wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean?

Little Rock, Arkansas also used to be on 77 conus sat as well as 61.5 spotbeam. I subbed to them in the past and I had them using the 77 sat , since I have the 1000.4 sat dish. Most of my relatives live there too. My only problem with them is that they have so many weather related interruptions I barely got through a prime time show with out them.
