Can't connect to server?

Hi

We've watched the first two parts of Tin Man but now when I try and download part 3 I keep getting the message "Can't connect to server, try again later".

This happened after we had a power outage yesterday.

The Hopper had to go through the setup routine again, but I checked both Broadband Setup and Diagnostics and they both show the broadband connection as OK.

This is a wired connection from my router to the Hopper.

My computers and Ipad all connect to the router fine, wireless and wired.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Mike

Have you done a power reboot of your Hopper? Always the first thing to do when you encounter a glitch. If it was me, I would power off my computer and router/gateway as well. Sometimes I have a similar situation with a Roku...that's what usually does the trick.

Hi

Since I posted, I've tried to get to the program through Dish Anywhere on my computer.

While I seem to be able to play other programs that I've tried, When I try and access Tin Man part 3 I get the message "Requires Dish Online Video Optimiser".
Even though I've installed it 3 times and restarted my computer, I continue to get this message..

I'm not getting this message, when I try to play other videos that I've tried from Dish Anywhere?

I'll try the reset and see what happens.

Mike

The "starting up" message is normal. Having to reset the network settings isn't but since it's working now, I wouldn't worry.

This could be an issue with that specific movie if it's not working from the computer as well.

PS. I did finally get it to work through my computer, I'll try the reset as soon as the Tour De France is over.

Hi

Did the Reboot, I didn't have to reset the network connection this time it came up working fine.
Then I reset the router, this required resetting the connection on the Hopper again.

While testing I did get it to download one On Demand movie, the the next one is sitting on Processing Your Request, and when I tried to access Tin Man part 3 the whole thing froze up and I had to shut the Hopper off to get out.

I'll check later and see if the one that's being processed comes through, it does show in "My Rentals" now, but won't play, just shows the processing message.

Sometimes I get the "Can't connect to server" message as soon as I select the on demand button, then after sitting for a minute or so, it will suddenly bring up the menu icons, and let me browse the on demand listings.

All kind of random.

As I said it seemed to be working normally until the power went off yesterday.

Hmmmm, that's interesting ... and odd. If you reset a router, yes, that will screw up many wireless clients. I've seen some require re-logging in even if you use the same SSID and passkey. But you said this is hard-wired connection. That should have ZERO impact on the network setup in the Hopper.

Is this a Hopper or Hopper with Sling ? If it's a Hopper with Sling, in the past, if you had the wireless set up on it and plugged in an ethernet cable, it would cause all kinds of screwiness. On the Sling version, I thought they fixed that (it disables the previous connection type and the 'new' one takes over). I don't know if the original Hopper does this (yet). There was no way to disable it directly either - you had to change the passkey on the wireless router so that it would fail to authenticate on the Hopper and then use the ethernet connection. For you, the quickest test may be to simply unplug the ethernet cable and use the WiFi connection.

Hi

It's a Hopper with Sling.
I did get to watch the last part of Tin Man, by doing it using Dish Anywhere through my computer, which is hooked to my TV via HDMI.

I did get it to download one movie through the dish box this afternoon, the message "Can't connect to the server, try again later." doesn't seem to be showing up now.
I get the menu with the tiles for the movies and it lets me select them and ask it to download.

But at that point it says "Processing Your Request" and that seems to be as far as it gets.

What I noticed is that I have a green light on the router for my computer but the one for the Hopper is yellow.
I'm guessing that means the connection isn't good on the dish box end but I haven't looked it up yet.

As I said before I'm running two computers and an Ipad from this router and all of them are working fine.
That's two wired connections, and two wireless connections counting the dish box.

Keep in mind I've only had the Hopper for about a week, but the On Demand stuff was all working normally until we had the power outage the day before yesterday.
I've reset the connection several times and it always pops right up and says that it's connected, same thing if I try Diagnostics.

No errors relating to the connection, it seems that it can't connect to the dish server for some reason?

I am havi

I am having the same problem. Watching Rizzoli and Isles that I recorded. It did not complete so I tried to watch it on demand.
It came back with server error although it said it was streaming at 7Mbs. My HWS is connected to router with Ethernet cable. Does the HWS
have Wi-Fi built in or do you have to us an adapter?

Hi

That's weird, I also had Rizzoli and Isles recorded, about 3/4 of the way through it suddenly said it was done.
It showed that it had recorded for 1 hour and 4 minutes but it wasn't there?

I rerecorded it when it ran later and it worked the next day when I ran it.

My Hopper seems to have been downloading the same movie for most of the day now, if I try to do something else is asks if I want to stop downloading the one that it's working on.
I'm going to tell it to stop doing everything and delete everything in my On Demand folder and see what happens.

Hi

Back to say that nothing has gotten any better, every time I try and use On Demand it say that it can't connect to the server, and that I should try again later.
Both tests of Wired and Wireless show that I have a connection and none of the other devices I have running from this router including my Smart TV have problems connecting.

I will add that when the Dish installer hooked it up, we first connected with the Wireless connection, which seemed to work, but later when he couldn't get it to connect he offered to supply a network cable and that seemed to work for a while.
But after having a power outage a few days later I was unable to connect and haven't been since except for a few occasions where it downloaded part of something and then quit.

If this only affected one of the network connections, I'd say it was damaged (either defective all along or from a surge related to this power outage). For both to act up, the odds of that are too slim for me to believe.... Unless they're a module that contains the WiFi chipset and the Ethernet connection.

What about trying a WiFi-USB adapter ? They used to hand them out like candy on installations, trouble visits, etc. They like the Netgear WNDA3100.
