Hopper Upgrade?

We will probably be moving within the next 6 months and we want to keep our Dish - it's pricey but we still like Dish. We have two of the original, non-Sling Hoppers that we love but with the upcoming move, I have been thinking about upgrading to the latest model at that time. We have a lot of content stored and is there any tool to transfer the stored content to the new Hoppers other than an EHD? If not, I guess we will just stick with what we have. The Hopper 3 is head and shoulders better than your present Hopper 2000s. Is there a reason that you are against an EHD? It isthe simplist way to move your stored content over to new equipment. I, myself, have moved my EHD from a 722 to a Hopper 2000 and finally to a Hopper 3.

Thanks for getting back to me! I have lots of timers and well over 1 TB of content on each Hopper. USB 2.0 will make this a long process! And I guess the timers will all have to be manually re-entered... Ouch! A bit much to be sure.

I hope you realize you are playing with fire by keeping so much content on each Hopper and not moving some or most to an EHD. If one or both would fail (not uncommon), POOF, there goes your shows/movies.

You can backup and restore one set of the timers to your new hopper from the remote.

Even considering the time to transfer to the EHD, I think you'd find it a worthwhile effort. The Hopper 3 is so much faster than the original Hopper, you'll probably wish you'd done it sooner!

There was (is?) a way to transfer by direct connection, but it turned out to be slower than via EHD. I don't recall the details as to which units this worked with. But would you be allowed to keep the old Hopper(s) for days, transferring to the H3? Would you really want to?

There is the direct transfer option, but like navy mentioned, its a good bit slower. I had to use that method to transfer recordings when my brother upgraded from a HWS to H3 since we couldn't get the Hoppers (at the time) to recognize his EHD. His HWS was probably ~70% full, and it took a little over two days complete the transfer.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you might have to have both Hoppers on the new CUI in order for the direct transfer to work.

Does H3 use EHD along with internal? Or is it like Directv once external is hooked up it doesn't see internal.

Yes you can use same HW/S EHD with Hopper 3. No, the EHD does not override the internal drive. For archiving from internal.

and you don't really have to transfer the recording back to the H3. You can watch them directly from the EHD. The only real reason to transfer any of those recordings to the H3 is if you want to watch something on DishAnywhere which doesn't see the EHD..

Welp! plugged USB 1 TB EHD in, got popup after couple tries asking if I wanted to format and I said yes. It did its thing but when I try to transfer it says no USB drive connected. I have software U226.

Called tech support, had me reboot again, went through format for 2nd time but EHD still isn't recognized in menu or when trying to transfer. Solution was to allow service tech to try when he shows Sunday.... LOL

Disconnect EHD. Hard reboot Hopper. Once up and running, connect EHD...see what happens.

Keep in mind: If a DirecTV receiver dies, the contents on the EHD connected to it are lost, because it is tied to the receiver. With Dish, the EHD is tied to the account. It will work with other ViP and Hopper receivers on the same account.

I did 3 times, I was getting it to format but would never finish. 3rd time I finally got a format complete. Its a bug in the software.
