DISH Introduces Flex Pack

Taxes shouldn't enter into any equation as far as comparison pricing. Companies are simply passing those on from other entities.
Sometimes, taxes do make a difference. There may be cases where one provider has promotional credits that also provide a credit towards the sales tax, while the other provider only offers a flat credit that does not credit the sales tax. Also, there are states where Dish adds a surcharge to the bill, while Directv does not itemize that surcharge. (They very well may be including the surcharge in the base package price.) In my opinion, it just ticks off customers to see an extra line-item surcharge on the bill, especially if they just switched from a provider that does not show that surcharge. There may even be cases where one provider is not subject to the same tax as other providers. All American Direct never charged me any sales tax. (Or, again, it could have been included in the package price.)
 
Why would I drop the DVR function, when the VIP722k IS a dvr? That's the most important function of all. I seriously doubt they would allow me to turn it back on without that, since it is a dvr.
You don't have to drop the DVR function. You could always switch to a ViP211k with an external hard drive and pay no monthly DVR fees.

Nah, I'm done with Dish permanently. Their fake come-on prices that more than double once you pay all their made-up never ending, and constantly increasing fee's are just ridiculous. Their email says they want to "kiss and make up", BUT, even though I had them for over 10 years before canceling last year, they still want to gouge me if I return! I also own my receiver, always paid full-freight on my sub, and they have never had to come to my house to do anything.

Now, IF it was $39.99 TOTAL and stayed that way for at least two years, I'd jump on it in a minute.

Wait, I've got the perfect solution for you. Welcome Pack ($19.99) + $15 DVR fee = $34.99
That way, you are covered even if there is a $5 per month increase at some point in the next two years. :D

Well, the price is good, but the channel selection is not so good. I'd rather have the channels in the Flex pack. It doesn't cost Dish a single dime to turn on the dvr function, it's just a tier hit to activate it. There's NO excuse for charging $15 a month for that.

A few more years of price jumps, and a lot more people will be jumping to much cheaper options.

I kind of agree, DVR shouldn't be a Premium anymore.
But it does have a cost to make, and a Cost maintain.

But if you buy your equipment, Then you should be held responsible when it breaks, But not have to pay a DVR fee either.

And Leased equipment paying $15 a month for DVR , shouldn't have to pay $8 a month, or $95 for monthly protection or service calls on equipment I don't own.

Right, but a new customer (or a returning customer) would not be able to get that rate because of the increase in the DVR fee. That is why the fee seems to be kind of arbitrary.
You mean that Dish is rewarding people for loyalty to the brand and handing out a little punishment to the people who hop from service to service.

The automated DVR as a program archiver is pretty worthless without the guide. Unless one only plans to use the DVR to pause live tv, the price for the DVR service is an absolute bargain!
 
Yes, if the grandfathered DVR fee for existing subscribers is already included in the contracts with the content owners, then why does it make a difference which DVR those subscribers use?
 
I wonder how customers would respond to providers offering a lifetime "DVR/Guide" service like Tivo? Would people jump on it, or would they just complain about that too? It could also help a little with retention by keeping longer term customers.

Litigious Tivo probably has "lifetime service" patented as well, however.

$400?! HMPF! They should offer a monthly rate instead.
