Anybody know why when i attempted to transfer my dish account to the wifes name, dish told me that i would need to begin renting their equipment to do this. I refused.
i prefer to own my equipment and not pay rent.
I failed to see the logic in their words.

Whats the advantage of owning equipment? You don't save any money and pay the exact same price for service that a renter would

In this case, there could be an advantage. The OP could sell the equipment to the wife, and she could open her own account. Generally, leased equipment cannot be transferred to another account.

Let's use your $2 a month as an example. With a Hopper 3 costing $244 it would take over 10 years to come out even....

I have 2 Wally's, which I paid less than $135 total for both. I like to own my own equipment and not have to pay useless taxes if not necessary. Pick your poison, I suppose. I also sell my owned receivers on Ebay. I sold my old 211 last night and made back 75% of what I paid for it. I prefer to deal in my own equipment rather than rent it from somebody else.

Completely agree, like owning my equipment, installers drive me crazy, trying to sort out stuff with phone reps, etc. May be crazy but I feel more free this way, knowing I can walk when I want, hate any kind of contracts with companies for TV, cell phones service etc. Pick your poison though is right.

Add to that, I have a lot of equipment and a fairly complex system I designed. Having OTA, Dish, my Big Dish, Roku, Chromecast, etc. I can then go to VHS, Beta, of DVD for viewing or recording. This is all fed out to an amp feeding 4 speakers in the corners of the den. Do I really want some novice to mess with that? An example, I set up a system for a friend so she could easily switch from Dish to VHS, DVD, or the Roku for viewing. After the Dish installing hooked up her new 221k receiver, they left the rest disconnected. She was really ticked. I hooked it all back up.

That sounds like the setup that every Dish customer has too. Oh wait, no it doesn't.... Dish allows that 1% of their customer base to buy and install their own equipment so just leave it at that.

Whenever a new receiver comes out, I'm usually the first one in my area to get it. I typically let the installer do what he needs to do around the outside and inside, but I'm the one who hooks up the receiver to my system. Now days though, it's just an HDMI hookup. So no big deal.

What was this in response to? I believe recordings stored internally will survive on owned receivers.
Yes, that is the way it worked when I transferred a DVR from one of my accounts to the other one.

The recordings would delete upon activation to a new account.
The old recordings were still listed. Or did you mean they would not be playable? I am pretty sure I tested one recording after transferring the receiver, to see if it work. I was setting up the receiver for my sister to watch, and she never complained about not being able to watch any of the old recordings, either.

There is such a thing as a 221k? I didn't know that existed.
