I am looking into Dish Network possibly. My question is if I want Americas Top 250 the sports pass, and all the movie channels channel (forgive me, maybe this was Americas Everything but I don't see it advertised on their website) once all of these movie channels are no longer free for x months what will my bill be for a Hopper 3 w/2 TVs.

On top of programming,

DVR Fee: $15
Joey: $ 7

Per month in the neighborhood of (for a new customer under two year deal) $97 a month package price guaranteed for two years. Includes a DVR fee of $10, $7 for Joey, $5 autopay discount for Top250. Easily found on the DISH site.

The new deal is even better than that. The Joey fee for new customers is going down to only $5 per month for two years.

How will Dish ever survive if they cut their Joey fees to $5.00 each?:smug

That's not the same as having no fee which is what some want. In addition it's for two years only. BIG difference. I can say that about anytime any company reduces anything they charge. I have seen it here from people with no idea about business. If XXX can charge less for a sale or for a new sign up they can do it all the time... Sure they can.

Exactly. Because if the Fees were being used to keep the prices lower for programming , like some suggest, then why would they ever be able to give discounts on the Dvr fee of the joeys? They can afford it because the Fees are being used to add to DISH's bottom line.

The fees ,as I said in another thread , are now too high and too many and are starting to hurt DISH. People might really want the Hopper 3 ,but they see the fees attached for the Dvr fee and the additional fees for joeys and they say : no thanks. THe fees for owned receivers like the joeys, that cant even work without the hopper, should have no monthly fee if the customer buys them. DISH needs to look at doing this , so more subs can upgrade to the hopper 3 and it can attract new subs as well as retain existing subs as well.

The Dvr fee should either be reduced or added services should be added to make it worth it. After all the auto skip feature is now just about worthless to subs in most markets ,due to the deals negotiated that make you wait anywhere from 3 days to 7 dates before it kicks in. Who waits a week to watch most shows these days?

Nope. You may not like my responses, but surely you can accept that others have different opinions, and can express them. We're not here just to be Yes men.

I don't totally disagree with some things you say there. If you include surcharges as fees DISH has lower and less fees than most anyone but that doesn't mean what they have aren't high, just as the whole industry has become.
DISH is already cutting costs, existing customers can be saving hundreds, new customers save hundreds and can save $7 off fees. In addition with the much lesser expensive packages they have that some others do not like Flex, Welcome etc. there can only be so much room to cut the price, and is why you don't get the discounts I am getting if you have those.

The bottom line is three things. We agree the fees for all providers have become very high. I don't know how that can be disagreed by anyone.

Second, we disagree the fees are just because. They are part of the business plan and if no fees or substantially less fees then something else has to be increased or Surcharges like Directv and Charter etc have to be added. If DISH did not continue to improve I would be more willing to say they could do what you want. But you ignore the money that goes into R&D and other places like satellite launches where DISH does not stay stagnant. So they do plow money back into the business.

Third, DISH has a path for saving big money. You (I don't mean literally you) may not like that path but it's there and I'm using it saving $$$ every month. The discussion could be, instead of any of those current customer savings, instead of the savings new customers get, maybe instead of some other perks that have a dollar value DISH could simply lower costs or maybe do away with a fee or two. To me that's the discussion.

You have to agree that DISH not changing what they are doing is a non option right? I mean the Flex pack is nice , the Fire tv stick is nice and can take the place of at least one joey ,but not more than one at a time. I am saying that something needs to change in order to GROW DISH. Owned receivers should see no fees for additional receiver. I still say that DISH should negotiate a better deal for more than one stream at a time- like Sling Tv is doing. This would make the DISH satellite business attractive to more new subs and existing subs as well. Because what they are doing is continuing to lose subs just about every quarter and they are really changing very little in response. The Flex pack is an improvement but it is not working either to attract new subs ,as last quarter numbers showed. Something has to change and since the programming is going to keep going up , the only thing DISH can change is their own Made up , charge it because they can FEEs ,in order to attract more new subs and keep the ones they have. Or they can continue to bleed till there is nothing left but the rural areas that have little choice other than satellite.

What we are saying isn't all that far apart but how DISH can do it may be. I don't think DISH can sustain itself by taking in less per each paying subscriber it has. It can't last forever losing subs with no gains but being a smaller provider isn't all bad and better than not being in business. Another words I do not think DISH can simply charge less and not make up that loss somewhere else, I think you do think they can.
But we agree 100% if they want to grow or at the very least stop losing overall subs they need to do something different or different from what others are doing. As you say they have indeed been trying different things it may be one quarter too soon to see if there has been a difference. For DISH allowing you to watch for no cost on a second TV with FireTv is big for them. I think Flex Pack is a very good value. Time will tell if that helps. Directv though financially on it's own may not have been a bonanza did differentiate itself with the Sunday Football package and brought in subs. Sounds trivial but to me have had far better commercials overall and made themselves more synonymous with Satellite TV and when you hear celebrities talk when they mention watching TV they say Directv. So we agree they need to do something different or at the least keep trying on that, things that add value to the subscription as you point out I agree with.

It won't matter. The industry is so saturated/stagnant and even shrinking that growth is not possible. All that can be done is to keep the ship from sinking too fast. The biggest change will have to be what content owners charge for their content.
