From what I'm told DISH and retailers will be offering the Western Digital Elements 2TB USB hard drive. The DISH MSRP will be $149.99 and I'm told our distributor will have them next week.

Apparently USB powered hard drives are now supported, at least this one seems to be. :)

I saw that model in Mydish last week. I am glad they went back to WD.

Does this only work with Hopper 3? I don't see it listed on mydish. :(

Oh, I have no doubt of that. I wasn't inferring that you were overpricing. I might think that Dish thinks a bit too much the product though.... :D

I didn't think you were inferring that at all Bobby. It is a bit pricey at first blush but when a DISH tech or one of our techs sells one on site we hook it up, format it, get it working and show the customer how to use it. That's worth a little for the right customers. :)

So, is there a discount for customers who do not get it set up by a tech, but instead get it shipped directly to us? The price should at least include shipping and handling, since we are doing all of the work that is included in the sale price. :)

Why not just buy it from the Amazon link in Bobby's post above for half the price? :D

Turns out even the H1 supports USB powered slim drives now. I bought this one yesterday and have already successfully formatted it and transferred shows to it (in preparation for an H3 upgrade next week).
Amazon product ASIN B00FRHTSK4
I am not certain, but I think the real issue (and reason for the Dish statement that you must have a separately powered drive) is that the early USB-powered drives that came on the market five or more years ago were less power-efficient than the ones you can buy today. I remember that the first USB powered drive I purchased did not work reliably with my USB 2.0 PC back then, unless I plugged the other end of the Y-cable into a separate power source. I do not run into that problem with the new ones. I think they design them better now and they aren't as picky about the amperage available from the port. Again, I'm not sure about this. But the drive linked above works fine on my H1, despite Dish's statement to the contrary.

Edit: I just remembered that my H1 is not an original model. I think it's an "H1 Version 2" or something. My original H1 failed, so Dish sent a replacement which I noticed was a little faster (but it does not have built-in Sling). Not sure if that makes a difference.
